New Delhi (AFP) - A 16-year-old Indian girl who was raped and then set on fire on the roof of her home has died, police said Wednesday, the latest in a string of horrific sexual crimes in India.
The teenager, who sustained more than 90 percent burns in Monday's attack, died in hospital early Wednesday, the investigating officer told AFP.
"Unfortunately she could not be saved despite the best efforts of the medical staff," said Ashwani Kumar.
"We have arrested the accused, who is 19 years old and sent him to judicial custody.

(53,235 posts)women earn 75 cents to the dollar of men, when U.S. states legislate left and right to prevent women from having control over their bodies, there's no value of women in western culture.

In most "abortion on request" countries, women have no control over their bodies after X number of weeks. Women's judgment and lives are not valued.

(2,899 posts)I've made good money/ran my own business and have always controlled my body.
I am very valued. Always have been.
PS, the UK is also has a 'western culture' and had a woman at the helm for many years.

(2,899 posts)What is so special about me that I'm living a good life as a woman? I just got on with it and never did find that the world was out to get me because I have a vagina.
< look here's me in a Burger King hat.
PS, think of all the successful women around..... in the western culture. You probably couldn't find any in some other cultures.

(29,503 posts)Not only is life cheap, it's bought and sold - illegally, but nevertheless, that's part of the answer.

(27,464 posts)In this case I'd really like to see the rapist set on fire himself and allowed to burn for a while. Not to death, of course, but long enough. I didn't used to think in such vindictive terms but I am no longer interested in being compassionate where such crimes are concerned.

I'm not American and there is much about this culture that I believe is ridiculous. When I posted I was not actually recommending a course of action but responding with anger, appropriate anger. You think a lifetime in jail isn't cruel? Bullshit. The death penalty? The easy way out but also cruel. Having society support such filth until they shuffle off... yada yada yada.
I have ideas about how those who commit the most heinous offenses should be handled and they do not involve anything more dreadful than forcing them to support themselves and live according to what they earn, separate from the rest of society but in the company of those like them, with no further assistance in any form that they do not create for themselves in their little self-made paradise.
Your thoughts?

(1,196 posts)You seem to be advocating a sort of banishment of those guilty of heinous crimes to maybe an uninhabited island or something where they can only harm themselves. If so, I am 100% in agreement. The most important thing is to remove these sick individuals from society so they can't harm anyone else.

(5,751 posts)I may forget about this particular girl, but I won't forget that these things happen in supposedly civilized societies. India needs to crack down and HARD until these people stop it.

Does anyone know if the perp is a member of a protected class so we can start making excuses for him.(Where is that sarcasm thing)

(11,945 posts)it might help. The Indian government needs to expect very unpleasant repercussions if they don't crack down hard on males who rape and otherwise abuse females.

(1,196 posts)on males who rape and otherwise abuse females making Sweden #2 in the world in rapes per capita. Give me a break.
They are actually celebrated by many here on DU for their political correctness in minimalizing the enormous rape problem that has exploded in their country.
