N.H. won't ban women from showing breasts or nipples in public

Source: CBS News

CONCORD, N.H. -- The New Hampshire House on Wednesday rejected a bill that would have made it crime for women to expose their breasts or nipples in public, a measure that caused an online dispute among several legislators that drew national attention.

The House voted against making it a misdemeanor for women to show their breasts with "reckless disregard" for whether it would offend someone. The bill was partly a response to a "Free the Nipple" movement that led to two women being cited for going topless at a Gilford beach. A judge dismissed that case in February.

<snip>

The bill caused the spat among lawmakers in December after a male lawmaker said if women want to show their breasts publicly, they should be OK with men wanting to "grab" them.

Bill supporters had cautioned that allowing women to go topless at beaches could lead to them also going topless at libraries and Little League games. They said they were trying to shield families and children.

Scott Randolph, Florida Lawmaker, Reprimanded For Using The Word 'Uterus'
03/31/2011 04:44 pm ET | Updated May 31, 2011

Apparently, a lawmaker in the Florida House of Representatives ran afoul of that august body's rules of politesse today after he used an inappropriate word on the House floor today.

That word: uterus. Wait, what? (original story no longer available: http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/the-buzz-florida-politics/content/democrat-chastized-saying-uterus-house-floor)

During last week's discussion about a bill that would prohibit governments from deducting union dues from a worker's paycheck, state Rep. Scott Randolph, D-Orlando, used his time during floor debate to argue that Republicans are against regulations -- except when it comes to the little guys, or serves their specific interests.

At one point Randolph suggested that his wife "incorporate her uterus" to stop Republicans from pushing measures that would restrict abortions. Republicans, after all, wouldn't want to further regulate a Florida business.

That's sexual assault, and it will (rightfully) get you jail time. No, seeing a woman's breasts in public does NOT give you a license to grab them without her permission. It gives you license to mind your own business. She's doing her thing. Go do yours.
There's a woman in Austin I see from time to time that goes topless on a busy downtown street. The first 2 times I just glanced, as in, "well, that's rather unusual", then went back to my book.

"They should be ok with men wanting to 'grab' them" Ugh. If I were an electron, I'd be pissed off for being part of that sentence on someone's computer.

At the first mention of visible female nipples, a GOP lawmaker's immediate response is that "somebody" will try to grab them.

"Somebody." Right.

Someone needs to tell them they fit right in with the Taliban where women are concerned. They want to pay them less, cover them up...

"the lower body parts aren't natural?"
As is fecal matter natural too... hardly a compelling argument to play with it in public. But again, if that's your thing, go entertain yourself.

State Motto. The words "Live Free or Die," written by General John Stark, July 31, 1809, shall be the official motto of the state. It was the 1945 Legislature that gave New Hampshire its official motto and emblem, as World War II approached

Republican representative Josh Moore, one of the bill’s co-sponsors, wrote that women who want to expose their breasts should have no problem with a man’s inclination to stare at it and “grab it”.
...

Al Baldasaro, another Republican, chimed in to disparage Bouldin’s appearance.

“No disrespect, but your nipple would be the last one I would want to see,” he wrote. “You want to turn our family beach’s (sic) into a pervert show.”

/ Moore has since withdrawn his cosponsorship of the bill, citing the negative attention his comments have drawn. Baldasaro doubled down. Only fair to point out that most Rs thought they were out of line for the comments and/or the entire bill
