Bill that would expand health coverage to more low-income Nebraskans moves ahead

LINCOLN — A new plan to extend publicly funded health coverage to more Nebraskans is headed to the floor of the Nebraska Legislature.

The Health and Human Services Committee on Thursday advanced legislation that would pull $63 million over three years from the Health Care Cash Fund for a pilot project that would use Medicaid funds to provide health coverage to low-income people.

“We have 97,000 Nebraskans who need help, and they need access,” said Lincoln State Sen. Kathy Campbell, the committee chairwoman.

“Seventy percent of them are working full or part time. These are people who are contributing to the economic health of the state of Nebraska. They are now asking us to help them to help with their health care.”
