Obama Says Republicans Have Selves to Blame Over Party `Crackup'
Source: Bloomberg
President Barack Obama said Republicans should look in the mirror to assign blame for tumult and rancor in their presidential nomination process.
Obama rejected suggestions by some Republicans such as former Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal that his policies and stances have contributed to the divisiveness in the country that has propelled Donald Trump in the partys nomination race.

The Republican political elites, and many of the information outlets, social media, news outlets, talk radio, television stations, have been feeding the Republican base for the last seven years a notion that everything I do is to be opposed, that cooperation or compromise somehow is a betrayal, Obama said.
He noted the prevalence of the notion that he wasnt born in the U.S. and thus was an illegitimate president, which has been fanned by Trump.
What youre seeing within the Republican Party is, to some degree, all of those efforts over a course of time creating an environment where a somebody like a Donald Trump can thrive, Obama said. Hes just doing more of what has been done for the last seven and half years.

(205,522 posts)Instead of representing their constituents, the Republican Congress, led by Mitch McConnell, has made it their priority to oppose anything, no matter how much it benefits Americans, put forward by a president who was overwhelmingly elected by the American people! They only have themselves to blame for the rapid dissolution of the Republican party...

History will judge but he has been eclectic, and very often acted in the
long run best interests of the country, with wisdom and foresight, and
offered moderation and compromise.
I would say among the best presidents of the last 50 years for sure

(368 posts)Two reasons why the GOP is in so much trouble, and my take on what contributed to this party becoming the gutter party. On two occasions the Repubs sold their soul to the devil. First, in 1980, they pleaded with the religious extremist to join their party, and the second, in 2008 when they begged the tea party to come aboard.

(8,445 posts)I'm going to buck Obama on this one.
Americans steeped in the uncertainty of globalization, and the border strife that comes with it, have created Trump with the help of the corporate media. Since Obama is a neoliberal pusher of FTAs, he bears some of the responsibility for creating that environment. He is a self-described Reaganite. Obama supported the undermining of democracy in Latin America and exacerbated the reasons why people have fled to the US.
Yes, there are 'always' Republicans to blame (just ask the Clintons). But look at what happened in 2014 midterms... the Democrats ran with DINOs and people didn't turn out for them.
The political establishment didn't give people economic alternatives, and now the irrational part of the electorate wants to go after scapegoats.

(348 posts)I think a mass exodus is in the offing and the only thing that will happen when forced to face a DNC who is the plutocracy. We're liberals for pete sakes. We just can't support it. I don't think they know a mass exodus is in the offing at this minute. I think they assume we'll just all vote for the plutocrat... And I think many of us just can't. I will have a very difficult personal problem if Hillary is the choice and I have to vote with the plutocracy. I think 1/2 the Dems will be deciding to stay or go over it - and many have already registered as independents.

(348 posts)who we vote into congress, correct. However, since out congress are all millionaires, how do we get someone to not be corrupt when they get there? I think it's going to take a lobbyist overhall and a campaign financing overhaul and that's the catch 22. How do you get people who are corrupt to regulate themselves? Bernie might try but that assumes he could get elected when the system is massively stacked against him with DNC corruption. The Superdelegates are lobbyists and establishment Dems who take money from lobbyists. The superdelegate system is in to protect the corruption. When I heard they included lobbyists the only thing that stopped me from going down and registering as an independent was I was at work and couldn't leave. I'm now waiting around to vote for Bernie in the Caucus and see what happens.
I don't think we can fix the DNC. I really don't think it will fix itself. I pretty much see the same thing happening to it as the RNC. They sold out their voters and their voters ran. I bet 30% of the democrats leave the DNC this year and the only reason they'd stay at all is if Bernie were getting elected. We'll see. I bet the Hillary supporters stay - they don't mind fully supporting the plutocracy and saying they are, "liberal." And, I'll bet liberals run.
