Two U.S. soldiers in South America contracted, recovered from Zika: commander
WASHINGTON
Two U.S. soldiers serving in South America contracted Zika but have fully recovered and returned to duty, while a third, pregnant service member left the region early for fear of contracting the virus, a top U.S. commander said on Thursday.
Zika infections have been linked to thousands of birth defects as the mosquito-borne virus spreads rapidly in Brazil and other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Two U.S. servicemembers stationed in Brazil and Colombia, both men, were confirmed to have contracted Zika, said Navy Admiral Kurt Tidd, commander of U.S. Southern Command.
"Both cases were confirmed. The cases have (been) resolved," Tidd said in a news briefing. "They both returned to duty."

(3,764 posts)except for the possible birth defect issue, the Zika virus seems to be much ado about nothing mostly. While it's true that it can cause birth defects, so can having rubella at certain points in a pregnancy. Also, there is talk about a small percentage going on to cause Guillain-Barré syndrome, most people who get Zika don't even know they have it and those that do usually aren't particularly sick.
Also the CDC has this to say about microcephaly:
Microcephaly is a lifelong condition. There is no known cure or standard treatment for microcephaly. Because microcephaly can range from mild to severe, treatment options can range as well. Babies with mild microcephaly often dont experience any other problems besides small head size. These babies will need routine check-ups to monitor their growth and development.

So even with microcephaly, not all children who are born with it suffer from any mental impairment. So although it is wise to try to prevent Zika and microcephaly, it's not going to be a big deal for most people.
