Sidestepping Apple dispute, Obama makes case for access to device data
Source: Reuters
U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday made a passionate case for mobile devices to be built in such a way as to allow government to gain access to personal data if needed to prevent a terrorist attack or enforce tax laws.
Speaking at the South by Southwest festival in Texas, Obama said he could not comment on the legal case in which the FBI is trying to force Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) to allow access to an iPhone linked to San Bernardino, California, shooter Rizwan Farook.
But he made clear that, despite his commitment to Americans' privacy and civil liberties, a balance was needed to allow some intrusion when needed.
"The question we now have to ask is: If technologically it is possible to make an impenetrable device or system where the encryption is so strong that there is no key, there's no door at all, then how do we apprehend the child pornographer, how do we solve or disrupt a terrorist plot?" he said.

(254 posts)This is a terrible idea. If the government wants to access people's personal devices, it should get better sleuths and better technology not force private companies to make devices less safe for everyone. If the police or whoever want to crack open a private individual's device, it's entirely the police's problem. If the FBI are not good enough, well, tough luck. They need to try harder. Remember that if it's easier for police to access a device, it's also easy for hackers and criminals to do so.
Besides, if American devices become easy to access, people will start opting for devices and software made in other countries which are not bound by American rules. American companies will start losing business. I hope that Tim Cook does not give up the fight. It's a good cause.

Obama is NOT a friend when it comes to civil liberties. He has proven this time and time again.

(5,082 posts)This is horrible. Everyone knows these requests are mostly for drug cases. The war on terror is an excuse to rebrand the failed and unpopular drug war. Obama supports this? Extremely disappointing.

(16,926 posts)What the government is demanding is essentially equivalent to telling a lock manufacturer to fabricate a skeleton key and then advising everyone with those locks on their front door that they have nothing to be worried about, because hackers simply won't have access to that key. Trust us.

(930 posts)Obama and friends could start with, oh I don't know, preventing U.S. corp's from parking all or most of their income offshore...
as a condition of their corporate charter. (Pause for laughter.)
Sounds so quaint, but is the U.S. really helpless to stop other countries (many of which are allies) from boosting their economies with untaxed U.S. corporate income?

He pushes bad trade deals like TPP and H-1B visas, and conservative nominations to important positions.
This is who Obama is, always was, and always will be a third-way corporatist who cloaks himself in a progressive-looking suit.
The only thing we can do about it is to vote optimally in this upcoming election.
