Conservatives pin hopes on convention fight to stop Donald Trump
Source: CNN
Prominent conservatives led by Erick Erickson on Thursday called for a unity ticket and a convention fight to stop Republican front-runner Donald Trump, a sign of the growing desperation in the party establishment to find an alternative to the billionaire businessman.
"If that unity ticket is unable to get 1,237 delegates prior to the convention, we recognize that it took Abraham Lincoln three ballots at the Republican convention in 1860 to become the party's nominee and if it is good enough for Lincoln, that process should be good enough for all the candidates without threats of riots," Erickson wrote in a statement after conservatives gathered in Washington to discuss ways to thwart Trump's march to the nomination.
The long and contentious meeting at the Army Navy Club included discussion about a unity ticket involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, according to a source familiar with the conversation. But the group decided not to commit to that pairing "because of the egos involved," according to the source.

The group left the door open to potentially supporting a third party race if Republicans are unable to stop Trump.

Hmm, going in, the word was a third party run was on the top of the list. Maybe they couldn't find a sacrificial lamb?

So far, Trump is the most credible candidate to the conservative/republican base.

Kasich does not strike me as an egomaniac, at least not by repuke standards. I'll wager the "unity ticket" discussed was Kasich/Cruz, not the other way around.

But he is very smart. After he got his hand slapped attempting to take collective bargaining away he toned it way down; he figured out Ohio is a swing state and new the Scott Walker wing was losers. He then forced expansion of ACA by his parties legislature. (Though he also signed the attack on Plan Parenthood--yuck.)
It's hidden, but it is there.

(14,176 posts)8. So Ted, tea baggin shut down the gamint, Cruz is their answer?
There used to be concerns from the old guard Republicans, Boehner, McConnell, McCain, etc.. that the Tea Baggers would split the party and they couldn't get anything done. And the kind of behaviour of Cruz and his tea baggin yokels were bad for the party. Now they all hope he can defeat the Don. What a clusterfuck for them.
