Leon Panetta: US is running out of patience with Pakistan

Source: The Guardian

The US defence secretary, Leon Panetta, has said the United States is reaching the limits of its patience with Pakistan because of the safe havens the country offers to insurgents from neighbouring Afghanistan.

In some of the strongest language used by a US official to describe the strained ties between Washington and Islamabad, Panetta said: "It is difficult to achieve peace in Afghanistan as long as there is a safe haven for terrorists in Pakistan."

Panetta arrived in Kabul on Thursday morning for talks with Nato military leaders amid rising violence in the war against the Taliban and a spate of deadly attacks, including a Nato air strike said to have killed 18 villagers.

"It is very important for Pakistan to take steps. It is an increasing concern, the issue of safe havens, and we are reaching the limits of our patience," he told reporters.

5. I'll reveal one of my greatest fears.
Thu Jun 7, 2012, 03:18 PM
Jun 2012

Years ago when my kid, aged 4 or so, refused to comply I said I'd count to 10 and he'd "better do what I say or else."

He was afraid of what "or else" could possibly be and so he complied. In the intervening 4 years the counting threat has worked. All I have to do is say, "I'll count to..." and he's complying before I say the number.

The first time I pulled this trick my wife asked, "If he didn't do it, what would the punishment have been?" "I have no idea" was my response.

I fear the day when he says, "I'll take the 'or else'" or waits for me to get to the number and say, "You're in trouble now!" because he thinks what he's doing is more than worth the punishment. I still have no idea what I'll do. There was no "or else." Hasn't ever been an "or else." But whatever it was/is had better be so awesomely horrendous that it'll justify all the compliance it's wrung out of him. If I don't drop the routine soon the punishment will have to be something like castration or amputating his nose. (The wife won't allow that, of course.)

"We're running out of patience, Pakistan" is the same kind of thing. Anything we do is very likely to make Pakistan even less dependent on us, even less compliant than she is now, and make for worse conditions for us.

All we're doing is blowing up huge groups of their people, then labeling them all terrorists, even the women and children. Damn, you just can't get no appreciation!?! I mean we always welcome it when people from another country come here and kill our citizens, like 9/11, Oh wait, maybe not. Hmmmmm....

Seems to me our bullying in the ME from Pakistan to Yemen to perhaps Syria as well,... the industrial military complex has ordered for the enemies of tomorrow to be created today so they can have a positive long term growth outlook.

when their elections are openly stolen right before the eyes of the people, a theft which we endorsed with a glowing press conference. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that open corruption and nepotism infest the ruling order that we installed and maintain. Until these two things are addressed, nothing will change.

I don't see how bombing people in Pakistan will fix that.

US cozying up to India for military support
06 June, 2012, 12:58

US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta is in India to encourage the country to play a more active role in the Afghanistan conflict. The US also seeks to curtail Chinese dominance in Asia by strengthening military ties with the emerging power.

Panetta’s two-day tour round India is part of Washington’s initiative to further establish its influence in Asia, using the country as a key platform.

***snip***

Washington is after India’s support to reach Afghanistan now that Pakistan is growing hostile, says Brian Becker, a coordinator of the anti-war ANSWER coalition. The NATO presence in Afghanistan has been rapidly losing support following numerous US drone strikes that have led to significant casualties.

“The US is seeking to build an Indian-Karzai access which would enable the US to maintain its positions in Afghanistan long after 2014 – the time for purported withdrawal of US combat troops. The US wants to keep military bases in Afghanistan and obviously needs a partner. That puts Pakistan in a precarious situation,” Becker told RT

Of course a better solution might be just to leave Afghanistan as quickly as possible. We accomplished the primary goal of that effort years ago. Our military is good at destroying things but we suck at nation rebuilding.

If I were President (and I will admit that it is a damn good thing that I am not), my policy would be that if a nation attacks us or sponsors terrorists that do, we will put it back into the stone age and leave. I suspect that we would only have to do this once. We might be hated by other nations but we are anyhow. We would probably only have to do this once and the word would go out to not fuck with the United States. Sometimes it's better to be respected than to try to be liked.

12. I didn't suggest attacking Pakistan ...

Obviously they are taking advantage of us and are not our friends but they haven't directly attacked our nation or sponsored terrorists who did.

It is my feeling that if we offer aid to a nation, especially military aid, it should be to those who are our friends.

I firmly opposed engaging in warfare against nations merely because we wish to overthrow a dictator and increase our power in a region of the world. Iraq is such an example.

16. In the Mumbai terrorist attacks
Thu Jun 7, 2012, 07:23 PM

Pakistani ISI had given specific instructions to kill Americans and Jews.

The wire transfer of $100,000 for 9/11 came from Pakistani ISI.via Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, an ISI asset known to Indian intelliegence.

Pakistan has ALWAYS been at war with the US while shamelessly taking the money and military hardware.

How long do you want us to be fooled by this enemy?

you will notice that I do not favor giving money to a nation that might well use it to attack us.

I instead suggested offering support to India who might well prove to be a better friend.
