'Car Talk' Guys Are Retiring, But Their Best Stuff Will Be Rebroadcast

Source: NPR

June 8, 2012; Our Fair City – Tom and Ray Magliozzi, aka Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers, the comedian mechanics who host NPR's Car Talk, will tell their listeners this afternoon that as of this fall, they'll no longer record new programs. But their weekly call-in series will continue to be distributed by NPR drawing on material from their 25 years of show archives.

"My brother has always been 'work-averse,' " says Ray, 63. "Now, apparently, even the one hour a week is killing him!"

"It's brutal!" adds Tom, 74.

The brothers have been taping Car Talk at WBUR in Boston for 35 years, and the show has been a staple on NPR Member stations for the last 25 years. With older brother Tom turning 75 this year, the guys decided it was time to "stop and smell the cappuccino."

Yes, the man is of the left(generally), there were a few creative moments on APHC, and I appreciate his keeping a vanishing entertainment form alive, but my God, the program is such a precious, hackneyed, fat-assed bourgeois chardonnay circus...Christmas dinners in Minnesota with flatulent inlaws and the daughter who comes back from college a purple-haired vegan atheist demanding a tofu turkey. The cutesy messages from the audience-"Miggles and Brad, give our love to the labradoodle pup, we'll see you at Granny Kick's house in Newport"- OY! And Garrison, please, enough with the attempts to sing already. Believe me, Jolson you ain't!!!

and to us old hippies who understand the message in the stories and jokes.
I've listened to him since 1980 something.
It's a familly thing.
Puns and groaner jokes and corny, with sometimes off key guests, indeed..but also gentle, and kind, no sharp edges.
I think of the show as an auditory Valium.
And a nice habit of many years, marking the start of a weekend.

so cars problems are mostly a binary thing any more. a light on or a light off.

but those guys are still amazing in their diagnoses.

they are also notable in their advocacy of:

1) not buying a new car...saying for years that not buying one was cheaper even after fixing the old one, almost always

2) talking about the environmental issues around cars...not changing oil every 3,000 miles, because it's wasteful and polluting, saying 5,000 was better and saying it before it was the common advice.

3) advocating not driving at all or not owning a car, or taking public transit

4) talking about global warming, for years now

whatever their faults, these environmental messages made them unlike most other car shows you'll hear or see, and that's a reason to miss them.

And here's another one:

--their logic. I used to have my classes listen to them to see how they would analyze a problem. They'd do it in a jocular manner, nevertheless, they were very astute at inductive and deductive reasoning.

Sad day. Finding out we're losing PHC was bad enough, but "Car Talk" too? The dial will never be the same.

I hate to see them stop but there comes a time for everything. I can understand Tom's need to take it easy in his older years. They always seemed to be progressives in their political thinking. Sometimes their liberalism would reflect in their comments even when they were addressing auto mechanic questions.

I love them. Having relatives like them would be a blast.
