AWARE employees approve union

Employees of AWARE Inc., a nonprofit group that entered into a contract with the state earlier this year to provide care to the developmentally disabled being moved from the Montana Developmental Center, have voted to unionize, officials said.

AWARE’s Chief Executive Officer Larry Noonan said it’s a move that could benefit the company in terms of letting management know what’s needed and aid in lobbying the Legislature to get the resources to better serve clients. He said he believed about 800 employees would be affected by the change.

He said employees have been in talks with the Service Employees International Union.

“This is a big move for our employees and our organization,” Noonan said.
