Panama Papers: Mossack Fonseca leak reveals elite's tax havens
Source: BBC
Eleven million documents were leaked from one of the world's most secretive companies, Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca.
...
The documents show links to 72 current or former heads of state in the data, including dictators accused of looting their own countries.
They were obtained by the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
...
The data contains secret offshore companies linked to the families and associates of Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak, Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi and Syria's president Bashar al-Assad.

A network of secret offshore deals and vast loans worth $2bn has laid a trail to Russias president, Vladimir Putin.
An unprecedented leak of documents shows how this money has made members of Putins close circle fabulously wealthy.
Though the presidents name does not appear in any of the records, the data reveals a pattern his friends have earned millions from deals that seemingly could not have been secured without his patronage.
The documents suggest Putins family has benefited from this money his friends fortunes appear his to spend.

Icelands prime minister is this week expected to face calls in parliament for a snap election after the Panama Papers revealed he is among several leading politicians around the world with links to secretive companies in offshore tax havens.
The financial affairs of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson and his wife have come under scrutiny because of details revealed in documents from a Panamanian law firm that helps clients protect their wealth in secretive offshore tax regimes. The files from Mossack Fonseca form the biggest ever data leak to journalists.
Opposition leaders have this weekend been discussing a motion calling for a general election in effect a confidence vote in the prime minister.
On Monday, Gunnlaugsson is expected to face allegations from opponents that he has hidden a major financial conflict of interest from voters ever since he was elected an MP seven years ago.

While the Pakistani media had connected some of these BVI companies and London properties to the Sharif family in the past, Nawaz Sharif has denied ownership of any such property. Hussain and Hasan Nawaz Sharif, and Mariam Safdar, did not respond to queries emailed to them by The Indian Express.
Nescol Limited and Nielson Holdings Limited were incorporated in BVI in 1993 and 1994, respectively, and were held by one bearer share each. In February 2006, Mariam Safdar signed a resolution of Nescol Limited as the sole (bearer) shareholder. MF was appointed as the registered agent through Minerva Trust which described Mariam Safdar as the beneficial owner of both companies.

3 Apr, 2016 in Uncategorized by craig
Whoever leaked the Mossack Fonseca papers appears motivated by a genuine desire to expose the system that enables the ultra wealthy to hide their massive stashes, often corruptly obtained and all involved in tax avoidance. These Panamanian lawyers hide the wealth of a significant proportion of the 1%, and the massive leak of their documents ought to be a wonderful thing.
Unfortunately the leaker has made the dreadful mistake of turning to the western corporate media to publicise the results. In consequence the first major story, published today by the Guardian, is all about Vladimir Putin and a cellist on the fiddle. As it happens I believe the story and have no doubt Putin is bent.
But why focus on Russia? Russian wealth is only a tiny minority of the money hidden away with the aid of Mossack Fonseca. In fact, it soon becomes obvious that the selective reporting is going to stink.
The Suddeutsche Zeitung, which received the leak, gives a detailed explanation of the methodology the corporate media used to search the files. The main search they have done is for names associated with breaking UN sanctions regimes. The Guardian reports this too and helpfully lists those countries as Zimbabwe, North Korea, Russia and Syria. The filtering of this Mossack Fonseca information by the corporate media follows a direct western governmental agenda. There is no mention at all of use of Mossack Fonseca by massive western corporations or western billionaires the main customers. And the Guardian is quick to reassure that much of the leaked material will remain private.
What do you expect? The leak is being managed by the grandly but laughably named International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which is funded and organised entirely by the USAs Center for Public Integrity. Their funders include
Ford Foundation

The families of at least eight current and former members of Chinas supreme ruling body, the politburo, have also been found to have hidden wealth offshore.
It provides data on the financial activities of more than 120 other politicians and public officials from different countries.
The associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin are also identified for allegedly having operated shell firms.

The Panama Papers: 'Biggest Leak in History' Exposes Global Web of Corruption
'The story behind the #PanamaPapers?' tweets Edward Snowden. 'Courage is contagious.'
by Deirdre Fulton, staff writer

The Panama Papers is one of the biggest leaks and largest collaborative investigations in journalism history. (Photo: Screenshot)

An anonymous source, an enormous cache of leaked documents, and a year-long investigative effort by around 400 journalists from more than 100 media organizations in over 80 countries have yielded the Panama Papers, an unprecedented look at how the world's rich and powerful, from political leaders to celebrities to criminals, use tax havens to hide their wealth.
The investigation went live on Sunday afternoon.
German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote:
A year ago, an anonymous source contacted the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) and submitted encrypted internal documents from Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian law firm that sells anonymous offshore companies around the world. These shell firms enable their owners to cover up their business dealings, no matter how shady.
In the months that followed, the number of documents continued to grow far beyond the original leak. Ultimately, SZ acquired about 2.6 terabytes of data, making the leak the biggest that journalists had ever worked with. The source wanted neither financial compensation nor anything else in return, apart from a few security measures.
The data provides rare insights into a world that can only exist in the shadows. It proves how a global industry led by major banks, legal firms, and asset management companies secretly manages the estates of the worlds rich and famous: from politicians, Fifa officials, fraudsters and drug smugglers, to celebrities and professional athletes.

On May 15th, 2014, the prime minister of Iceland stood before parliament answering questions about how aggressively his government would sniff out tax cheats and fraudsters who use secret offshore companies. Would Iceland follow Germanys lead by purchasing revealing data from offshore whistleblowers?
The prime minister, Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, waivered.
It was extremely important that people work together on this, he agreed. But whether obtaining the information would be realistic and useful was unclear, he said.
What wasnt known was that the offshore files Iceland was considering buying included offshore companies linked to him and at least two other top members of his ruling government.

The Panama Papers, a massive leak of documents on the world of offshore financing used frequently by many of the richest and most powerful around the globe, sheds light on the finances of Mexican businessman Juan Armando Hinojosa Cantú, described as Mexican President Enrique Peña Nietos favorite contractor.
. . .
Hinojosa and other prominent Mexicans, mostly businessmen with close ties to the government, including at least one member of the Forbes billionaires list, were the subject of extensive articles published on line by Proceso and Aristegui Noticias Sunday to coincide with the ICIJ posting of the Panama Papers.
Proceso, Mexicos leading weekly magazine, reported that Hinojosa, a wealthy entrepreneur whose company, Grupo Higa, won multimillion-dollar contracts from the State of Mexico when Peña Nieto was its governor, secretly shuffled $100 million through banks and shadow companies.
According to Proceso, Mossack Fonseca, in collaboration with the Mexican branch of the law firm DOrleans & Bourbon Associates, helped Hinojosa set up a series of shell companies on behalf of family membersincluding their respective mothers who are in their 80sin New Zealand. Hinojosa and his wife then donated millions of dollars to the shell companies, which acted as beneficiaries of a foundation in Holland.
The firms were aware that the $100 million was just a small part of Hinojosas wealth, Proceso reports. In July 2015, an advisor with DOrleans, Bourbon & Associates in Miami, sent an urgent email message to a Olga Santini, director of Mossack Fonsecas branch in Florida.

The revelation of the Panama Papers detailing the off-shore structures of many wealthy clients is a "crime" and an "attack" on Panama, the law firm at the heart of the scandal has said.
"This is a crime, a felony," Ramon Fonseca, one of the founders of the Panamanian firm Mossack Fonseca, told AFP.
"This is an attack on Panama because certain countries don't like it that we are so competitive in attracting companies," he said.

Ranson, director of HMRCs risk and intelligence service, added: I am very keen to obtain this data from you so we can cross-reference it with our own extensive data, to see whether there is information that we do not have and which could be useful as part of our extensive investigations into offshore tax evasion.
In a statement, the Guardian said: We have received the request from HMRC and will consult with our international partners.
The UKs shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, on Monday urged the government to do more to tackle offshore tax evasion. Cameron promised and has failed to end tax secrecy and crack down on morally unacceptable offshore schemes. Real action is now needed....

The cache of 11.5 million leaked files is being referred to as "the Panama Papers" and was obtained from an anonymous source by German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. It was then shared by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists with the Guardian and BBC in the UK and other media outlets around the world.
Mossack Fonseca, the company the data originated from, is the fourth largest offshore law firm, according to The Guardian, and both it and the BBC claim the documents show the firm has "helped clients launder money, dodge sanctions and evade tax".
For its part, Mossack Fonseca says it has operated beyond reproach for the past 40 years and has never been charged with any criminal wrongdoing.
At 2.6TB, this is the largest data leak of the past several years - bigger than either WikiLeaks in 2010 or the NSA files in 2013.

Oleh Lyashko, the leader of the Radical Party, said Monday the trove of data on offshore financial dealings revealed by an international media consortium has implicated Poroshenko in alleged abuse of office and tax evasion.
Lyashko urged lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president. Poroshenko, whose faction has 136 seats in the 450-seat parliament, appears well protected from the motion, which requires a three-quarter majority to pass.
Poroshenko promised voters that he would sell his candy business when he was elected in 2014. But documents of the Panamanian firm indicated that he set up an offshore holding company and may have saved millions of dollars in Ukrainian taxes.

So we dodged a bullet there ...

"A stroll around any leisure harbour around the Mediterranean or the Caribbean will show a fair amount of Panama flags sported at the stern of the biggest super-yachts, indulgently moored. Other flags of convenience include St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Antigua and Barbuda... paradises of a few hundred years old tradition of English piracy. And they are still operating, yet now in another, more sophisticated scale. There is no need to hit and run anymore, you can comfortably sit in an elegant office in London or Zürich and get the transfers done. But the waters now known as the Internet are becoming more and more treacherous, as a number of hackers and whistleblowers are sailing around in search of big game.
Mossaka and Fonseca might not exactly be a spin-off Drake and Drake Ltd., but it is the firm your bankers will recommend should you wish your super-yacht to be conveniently flagged. The eleven million documents hacked from that legal firm (some reports say the leak might be originated in the Brazils M&F branch) are directly pointing at a large number of millionaires as well as to high politicians and their close family and friends circles. As far as we know, Latin American leaders are also conspicuously exposed to the leak. It is very early days, but the list looks very promising.
From the current Argentinean President Mauricio Macri, to the former secretary of the Kirchners couple, from the financiers of Kaiko Fujimori, current presidential candidate, to Juan Armando Hinojosa, Mexican president Enrique Peña Nietos favourite constructer from whom his wife bought her famous mansion, known as Casa Blanca. The list continues with a substantial number of Brazilian entrepreneurs, already in trouble because of Petrobras Lava Jato corruption scandal, up to Hugo Chavezs former bodyguard, who asked Mossaka and Fonseca for help him with a number of offshore firms, to put some savings out of reach.

(90,061 posts)REYKJAVIK, April 4 Iceland's opposition called on the prime minister and government to resign and planned a no confidence vote after a leak of documents stoked anger over his wife owning a tax haven-based company with large claims on the country's collapsed banks.
The allegations in the so-called Panama Papers that were released globally over the weekend surfaced in Iceland last month, but the renewed spotlight and a planned protest later will increase pressure on Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson.
Gunnlaugsson told privately held Channel 2 he did not plan to resign.
"The government has had good results. Progress has been strong and it is important that the government can finish their work," he said. "I will listen to the peoples' stand in the next elections."

You know who will make sure of it. The possibilities for blackmail are endless and they won't let this opportunity pass the agency by.

(160,590 posts)Panama to work "vigorously" to investigate offshore accounts
Updated 10:03 am, Monday, April 4, 2016
PANAMA CITY (AP) Panama's president says his government will cooperate "vigorously" with any judicial investigation arising from the leak of a vast trove of information on the offshore financial dealings of the world's rich and famous.
An international coalition of media outlets Sunday published investigations it said stemmed from the leak of 115 million records kept by the Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca on behalf of clients.
President Juan Carlos Varela said in a statement that the revelations shouldn't detract from his government's "zero tolerance" for any illicit activities in Panama's finance industry.
Ramon Fonseca, a co-founder of the law firm whose documents were leaked, told Panama's Channel 2 that the firm isn't responsible for any criminal activity carried out with offshore vehicles created for clients.
