California governor signs $15-an-hour minimum wage into law

Source: Reuters

Governor Jerry Brown on Monday signed into a law a bill raising California's minimum wage from $10 to $15 an hour by the year 2023, making the nation's most-populous state the first to boost pay to that level for the working poor.

The move marks the culmination of a deal Brown brokered with labor leaders and state Democratic leaders and puts California, home to one of the world's biggest economies, at the forefront of U.S. states and cities that have moved to surpass the federal minimum wage, which has remained at $7.25 an hour since 2009.

"This is about creating a little tiny bit of balance in a system that every day becomes more unbalanced," Brown said before signing the legislation.

It's a dollar an hour.
Another six to eight a day.
Anywhere from one to forty a week.
You really think that won't make a difference?

This is after it was raised to $10/hour this year, and $9/hour last year.
And opposed to the Republican plan to do jack shit.

And it's not to say that this can't change again, but really - all or nothing?

Over the course of 7 years, how much more will an increase from $10 to $15 be than the rate of inflation? Maybe not that much. Granted, that's still an improvement over the past, when the minimum wage was allowed to lag behind inflation for years, if not decades, but COL increases should be the minimum.

But it needs to be put in perspective. Seems like Brown has dangled that $15 holy grail out there, but so far down the road that it won't end up being nearly as much of a real increase as people who don't understand math or economics think it is. They hear the magic number and they're happy.

give up.

You are never ever satisfied.

That could be for one of two reasons, one is you are unfamiliar with how the system works and like to complain but are a liberal or you are not a liberal and you do this to make the process more and more difficult.

No way to know which.

Personally, I think it should be $20 an hour and it should be over the next 3 years and no longer than that.

But I know that cant happen, so I am grateful for what we did get.

And yes, I know perfectly well that this was a political move, designed to try to please both business owners who don't want to pay more in real money wages and workers clamoring for the minimum wage to go up to $15 an hour.

Do you have a problem with this action being put into perspective and portrayed accurately? Apparently so.

it's been sitting at 7.25 for seven years now and it will be ANOTHER seven years before it reaches $15. By then it won't be enough any more, but it will take another seven years before anyone can talk about it again.

We are so fucked as a nation. We USED to be number one. That was probably a lot more than seven years ago.

that for this country to get where we actually need to be (much higher wages much quicker) that a revolution of sorts is necessary?

The one Bernie wants wont be enough, we need Bernie AND a whole new house and senate, but that is gonna take work!

When I say the one Bernie wants isnt enough, it wont work without a new house and senate.

That will take some time and LOTS of money!

I agree, he is. He's right up there in front of his late father, Edmund G. Brown, Sr.

I've been a long time supporter of Jerry Brown et al. for many years. I voted for him when he ran for president in the late 1970s in fact.

I wish we could have him forever!
