Winston Moseley, man behind infamous 1964 rape and murder of Kitty Genovese, dies in prison at age 8

Source: New York Daily News

The man who raped and murdered Kitty Genovese — in what became one of the most sensational crimes in the history of New York City — has died, officials said.

The 1964 Queens slaying of Genovese, whose desperate cries for help were ignored, set the standard for urban indifference and became the basis for what social psychologists dubbed the Bystander Effect.

Officials at the time said the apathy over the attack in Kew Gardens allowed Winston Moseley, who knifed Genovese and then hid, to return and finish the job.

Moseley 81, who spent more than 50 years in prison for the crime, was one of the state’s longest-serving inmates, and was denied parole 18 times, including his last bid in November 2015.

....my mother and sisters were terrified.

It was a horrible case, we couldn't believe how people could have ignored the screams.

I'm not a vindictive person, but I'm glad he lived as long as he did to think about his crime. One has to wonder about where his is right now.

5. The murder of Kitty Genovese was a plot point on the teevee show "Girls" last night

The characters attended a witnessing play at the buildings in Kew Gardens, or something like them.

I turned to my wife and said, "You know the guy who did it is still alive in a New York State Prison?" Last night. Hadn't heard or thought about it in a long, long time.

So weird.

Much of what you have been led to believe about what happened rather, what didn't happen when Kitty Genovese was murdered is mostly myth. Her screams weren't ignored, nor did anybody NOT come to her aid.

Read this story from no less than the New York Post (It's still a Murdoch rag, but hey, even a blind squirrel...)

Given the nature of the crime by Winston Moseley, including the one following the Genovese murder (he held a couple hostage and raped the female) I wouldn't have minded much if Dow Hover (the New York State executioner) carried out one last job following Eddie Lee Mays

14. It was the Times, not the Post, that screwed up the Genovese story

I don't think the poster was saying anything about the Post and Murdoch in '64, but rather saying that their 2014 story was a good one even though it's a Murdoch paper.

were so incredibly hostile to women in the 60s that few prosecuted unless it was from the grave.

I'm glad he wasn't executed. Dying in prison after a long life behind bars where he couldn't hurt any more women sounds about right.

I had thought all this time that no one did anything to try to help her. Although still tragic, it's better to know that some did help.

it's true that all 38 people did not hear all the screams at the same time.....however, there is no denying they could have done more.....the only "help" she received was a man yelling out the window LEAVE THAT GIRL ALONE......Moseley left the scene but returned and finished her off when he realized no one in that building was concerned enough to come out of the building, nor did he hear any police sirens
