Trump vs Cruz, destroying the Phyllis Schlafly "Eagle Forum," I love it.

She does what she does for very focused reasons; unfortunately, however, those reasons always involve bigotry.

(231 posts)Not a fan of hers at all but she has to be at least 90 by now. Sounds like more suppression of free speech which I can't celebrate. Unfortunately it seems to be a common theme this primary season.

(31,392 posts)back in the 70's granting equal rights to women. OMG, the fear mongering! Shared bathrooms. Women
and children at risk. Oh, the horrible awful things that would happen. The same exact crap being promoted by the right wing that passed HB 2 here
in NC. It's the same tired old argument from the 70's dressed up this time to prevent
LGBT people from having equal rights.
Right wing Republicans are nothing but perverts. They want in the bedroom; they want in the bathroom. They are consumed
with who is doing what to whom--and where--that might have something to do with sexuality or bodily functions.
They are just a bunch of fear mongering bigots and a$$holes, and at one time, Schlafly was the Queen of Bigots.
Supporting Trump sounds like she's being consistent. Glad her group is rejecting him.

(45,984 posts)No, I don't and I assumed she would never endorse a candidate for whom I could vote. She's for Trump; she doesn't disappoint.
The question is: Why does anyone in the Eagle Forum care? I'm sure some would rather have her endorse a candidate other than Donald Trump. So let's move on to: Why can't anyone in the Eagle Forum who disagrees with her choice not indulge her in this? She was there at the beginning of the Eagle Forum, so why can't today's members not just indulge her? Are they threatened by elderly woman?
I first heard of Mrs. Schlaffly in 1964, at the age of 12, when a Goldwater-boosting friend of mine gave me a copy of A Choice, not an Echo to read. He thought it might persuade me to abandon my liberal Democratic leanings, such as they are in a 12-year-old. All I remember from the book is that the author, Mrs. Schlaffly, thought Goldwater was pretty cool stuff and the New Deal was evil. I was under the influence of my immediate family, my grandparents and my aunts and uncles, all of whom came of age during the Great Depression, all of whom benefited from the New Deal and most of whom still worshiped at the alter of FDR (I had the proverbial crazy uncle and his wife who were exceptions). Needless to say, I was not moved by Mrs. Schlaffly's missive.
As the years passed, I would hear of Mrs. Schlaffly now and again, always in a way that was annoying or obnoxious. I can't any instance where the position she took wasn't 180° from mine. Decades after the death of Joe McCarthy and the discrediting of the John Birch Society in conservative circles, Mrs. Schlaffly continued red baiting and smearing anybody to the left of Attila the Hun with red-painted innuendo. I can't remember a thing she said that I took seriously,
Nevertheless, just as I jealously defend my own freedom of conscience, I must stand up for hers. Let the lady support Donald Trump if she wants to and leave her alone. I'm not surprised that she would endorse a racist, misogynistic, homophobic, Islamophobic bigot with no social graces, and don't find her any more persuasive now than I did when I was 12. I can't see why anybody else, especially not those who allied with her over the years, can't indulge her passions in the twilight of her years.
