UC Davis spent thousands to scrub pepper-spray references from Internet
Source: sacbee.com/news = Sam Stanton and Diana Lambert
UC Davis contracted with consultants for at least $175,000 to scrub the Internet of negative online postings following the November 2011 pepper-spraying of students and to improve the reputations of both the university and Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi, newly released documents show.
The payments were made as the university was trying to boost its image online and were among several contracts issued following the pepper-spray incident.
.....
The objectives Nevins outlined for the contract included eradication of references to the pepper spray incident in search results on Google for the university and the Chancellor.
That objective was to be achieved by advising UC Davis officials on the use of Google platforms as part of an aggressive and comprehensive online campaign to eliminate the negative search results for UC Davis and the Chancellor.

During a protest against tuition hikes on November 18, 2011, a campus police officer, Lieutenant John Pike, used pepper spray on a group of seated demonstrators, and another officer also pepper sprayed demonstrators at Pike's direction. The incident drew international attention and led to further demonstrations, a formal investigation, and Pike's departure in July 2012.[15][16][17]
Documents released in 2016 through a public records request showed that the University had spend at least $175,000 to attempt to "scrub the Internet of negative postings" about the incident, in efforts that started in 2013. The university's strategic communications office, which has worked on the management of the reputation of the university and its chancellor, has had its budget substantially increased since the current chancellor took office rising from $2.93 million in 2009 to $5.47 million in 2015.[18]"
I bet it gets scrubbed in the near future.

UC Davis are idiots for spending money trying to scrub these.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to own up to it and try to improve?

(15,882 posts)DAVIS, Calif. - The riot-clad police officer who pepper sprayed a row of peaceful Occupy Wall Street protesters at a California university last week is a retired U.S. Marines sergeant twice honored for his police work on campus.
Lt. John Pike started working for the University of California, Davis police force in 2001. Now, as one of four lieutenants, he supervises more than one-third of the force including the investigations unit.
Pike has been honored twice for meritorious service, including a 2006 incident when he decided against using pepper spray against a patient in the campus hospital who was threatening his colleagues with scissors.
But an alleged anti-gay slur by Pike also figured in a discrimination lawsuit a former police officer filed against the department, which ended in a $240,000 settlement in 2008.

Maybe an internet contest, best paper with the subject "Why Going to UC Davis is Worth Getting Pepper Sprayed - 'Cause You Might", wins a free case of milk to wash the spray from your face.

(20,771 posts)So let them keep spending California taxpayer money to run around after historical reality with a broom and a pan.
At some point, someone might run the numbers and decide it's cheaper to a) ditch Chancellor Katehi, b) apologize and pay damages to those harmed, and c) make restitution to the entire community and the higher education sector by implementing policies friendly to free speech.
Oh, yeah, and maybe prosecuting the cop.
But hey, it's all so 2011, right?
Sorry, UC Davis officials. Justice may have a sell-by date here in America, but the memory of the Internet goes on regardless.

Some lawsuits needed here, especially against Katehi and that damn cop. But taxpayers should not have to foot the bill.

A former UC Davis police officer whose pepper-spraying of protesters gained worldwide notice thanks to a viral video has been awarded more than $38,000 in workers' compensation from the university for suffering he experienced after the incident. .....................
