Embattled NC Governor Calls Gay Rights Group ‘More Powerful Than The NRA’
Source: Huffington Post
Under attack for signing the controversial anti-LGBT law known as HB2, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) said Sunday that a gay rights advocacy group is more powerful than the National Rifle Association.
The Human Rights Council. My gosh, theyre more powerful than the NRA, McCrory told Chuck Todd on NBCs Meet the Press, alluding to the nations premier gun lobby. And they have millions of dollars, which makes me want to overturn [Citizens] United, because I dont know who their donors are, either. But they are putting on a lot of pressure, instead of having good dialogue.
Despite the groups power, McCrory didnt have its name right; it appears he was alluding to the Human Rights Campaign, which lobbies on civil rights for the LGBT community. The group has been a leading critic of the new law.

Pat McCrory cant have it both ways and say he doesnt want the government to tell the private sector what to do while he also sticks his head in the sand and ignores more than 160 businesses who have clearly said they want H.B. 2 repealed, Chad Griffin, HRCs president, said.

And that means repealing the bill you signed into law. You will be made to suffer until you decide that you no longer want to suffer.
Oh, look at that...we're short on time, and we won't be able to get to your side of the dialogue.

(61,703 posts)The NC state legislature tricked McCrory into signing a bill that he can't defend, and he was so blinded by his own phobias and his dim-witted certainty that this would win him reelection, Pat rushed to sign the bill the same day it was pushed through a special session.
In addition to being hateful to transgender folks, the bill is full of other things McCrory can't defend, but is powerless to fix. The state legislature doesn't listen to him. They're all running unopposed in safely gerrymandered districts.
There is no path to repealing this bill anytime soon, and Pat is the public face of it. I would be delighted to watch him squirm but he's taking down the state with him.

(1,138 posts)I know the gerry mandering makes it a lot tougher, but a good multipronged grassroots campaign will at least make them have to spend their money... It may also puts them on notice that the citizens of NC are tired of their shit...

(61,703 posts)And the gerrymandering is a real problem.
The Kochs are bankrolling this. It's all ALEC written legislation.
The rural areas of the state are very conservative. Ever since the teabag sector of the Republican Party took over in NC in 2010, they've steadily taken power and rights from the cities. We have wonderful progressive cities and universities here, but the Republican wrecking crew is trying to take us down.

(12,676 posts)...not the HRC that are the force between the economic backlash. Businesses don't care about race, gender, or religion - businesses care about the dollar; who spends it on their products and services, and how much they have to spend to cover operating and other costs.
This bill was bad for business from the onset. Anyone who had any modicum sense of the greater world and the way markets work would have recognized that immediately.
But I guess they thought that "Good Lord" will compensate for the economic suffering their "creating their own reality" and pandering to the lowest forms of religion put them in and miracle away all their problems. That is, if they were actually following what a Creator of the entire universe would have desired of them, instead of some hobgoblin of induced Cafeteria-Christian that they were praying would be their personal "Gawd" instead everybody's God.
Too bad they were determined to take everyone down with them

Is he talking about HRC, the Human Rights Campaign? They do have millions, around $30 mil a year, but they spend much of it on salaries and more black tie fundraisers. They aren't exactly known as a NRA-level powerhouse, more like PETA or some such. They do some good, but mostly they exist for their own existence, the epitome of the "Gay, Inc" NPO.

(18,318 posts)That the two most powerful interest groups in the U.S.A. are the combination of LGBTQ groups, and the NRA. Different aims, different organizations, often different tactics, but they get the job done in a relentless manner. And BOTH are characterized by large, active grassroots memberships who are willing to put in the money and effort to achieve their respective goals. Take a dispassionate moment in the midst of the hateful culture wars, and you can get a good schooling.

(27,829 posts)That's the part that gets me. As bad as the law is, it never should have been pushed through that fast. I remember once we were planning a Christmas party at my work and someone thought we should have, as entertainment, a hypnotist who made people think that they were drunk and that the men next to them had pinched them. Sadly, the committee voted to actually do this in the hand vote that took place after they showed the video. Only a couple of us voted no. BUT - a day or two later, the head of HR emailed us all that she'd taken the time to think it over, and decided that this was not a good option for Christmas entertainment at a law firm.
The guv should have stepped back like that and really consider the consequences. It was a knee-jerk reaction and I'm glad that it's causing them trouble.
