JERUSALEM (AP) -- Thousands of Israelis rallied in central Tel Aviv on Tuesday night in support of a soldier charged with manslaughter for shooting a Palestinian attacker as he lay wounded on the ground last month in the West Bank.
The demonstration came just hours after a Jerusalem district court convicted the main suspect in the July 2014 murder of a Palestinian teenager - an incident that ignited tensions in the lead-up to the 2014 summer war between Israel and Gaza's Islamic militant group Hamas. It's unclear what sentence the soldier faces but the teen's killer could face life in prison.
Israeli defense officials have criticized the conduct of the soldier - identified Monday as a medic named Sgt. Elor Azaria - while large segments of the public have rallied behind him and accused the government of abandoning him at a time of heightened conflict with the Palestinians.

But a video released by the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem showed one of the attackers still alive after the initial shooting. The video, taken by a B'Tselem volunteer, shows Azaria calmly raising his rifle, cocking the weapon and firing at the assailant's head. An autopsy determined the shot to the head was the cause of death.

(3,829 posts)Generally foreign, hostile soldiers are legitimate targets. If that soldier was in the US treating us like the illegal Israeli soldiers are treating the Palestinians, that soldier wouldn't live long.

(1,150 posts)who kill in circumstances where it's absolutely unnecessary.
This guy 'executed' a helpless combatant after a brief period of low-level combat. Doesn't that seem familiar?

(3,829 posts)if the trouble-making cops were Chinese that were protecting illegal Chinese "settlers"; and the cops were stealing most of our resources and had an almost seventy year record of ethnic cleansing, and destroying our homes, villages, towns, and freedom.

(5,902 posts)The real question is, how long do we intend to bankroll them?

(23,102 posts)We fund them to have 100% health care for everyone, yet deny health care to our own people. Arming Israel is more important to our politicians than keeping Americans alive. Sickening.

(3,051 posts)Israel does get a lot of aid from the USA. Chiefly subsidies to purchase weaponry made by US manufacturers. This is in the US's economic interest because those are fine jobs for US citizens.
And how much aid does Israel get? The same as Jordan, Egypt, et al. But somehow no one complains about aid to them.

(3,051 posts)I notice that the State of Israel is prosecuting this out-of-control soldier, despite public opinion to the contrary.
How, exactly, is Israel acting as a "rogue state" by prosecuting its own soldier for this (apparent) crime?
Oh, wait, it's not. It's doing what any decent state would do.
