Los Angeles (AFP) - Utah became the first US state to formally declare pornography a public health crisis, in a move backed by Republicans, seeking to shield its citizens from an "epidemic" of addictive sexual content.

A major adult entertainment trade group dismissed the move as "noxious" and an "old-fashioned morals bill," but experts say it could open the door to other US states to follow suit.

"Pornography is a public health crisis. The problem is rampant, yet it thrives in secrecy and silence," said Gary Herbert, the Republican governor of predominantly Mormon Utah, after signing the resolution, which cites what it says are numerous detrimental effects of porn.

"Today's bills will start an open discussion, bringing its very real dangers to light," he said in a statement.

Blah, blah, blah.

It should be difficult for kids to get, like any "adult" substance. Not banned, just more carefully restricted.

Also include updates on the war on drugs, prostitution, and government overreach.

Let's have some of that good ole censorship! (But don't touch my guns!)

I think I read that somewhere. You repress everybody, it's going to happen. Ever see Victorian porn? Wild stuff, unequaled today.

Maybe they need more Victoria's Secret stores in Utah -- and fewer of the Mormon underwear outlets.

Do they say why the porn is unhealthy? Is it something about the human relationships of the people watching the porn? Or is there some other problem?

& many adults, especially if it becomes an obsession/addiction.

I'm surprised legal porn can't be blocked from children and those who produce 'free porn' responsible to block from children. It is a crime isn't it to show porn to children?

So Utah politicians are declaring pornography a health crisis, eh? Let's take one guess about who that's gonna hurt.

Thanks to the law of conservatism which states that conservative leaders are very likely to be secretly doing the things which they are trying to ban, we will discover that they are filthy horndogs.

Someone is sure to break into their computers and leak their Internet browsing habits and the attachments they email to one another, and it will be sordid and amusing, and probably also timed to impact elections since they have provided the opportunity.

Some of them will probably have crossed the line into the criminal, as well, so Utah politicians really are providing a public service--by drawing attention to themselves and the fact that the public health crisis of pornography is greatly exacerbated by electing Republican politicians.
