Supreme Court Backs Arizona Voting Map in Republican Setback

Source: Bloomberg

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld Arizona’s state legislative districts, rejecting contentions that the map unconstitutionally dilutes the influence of Republican voters.

The justices Wednesday unanimously said the map, drawn by an independent commission, complies with the Constitution’s “one person, one vote” principle.

A group of Arizona residents contended that the commission actually had partisan motivations and packed white Republicans into a handful of districts to give Democrats an edge.

The high court said there was ample evidence that the commission wasn’t driven by partisan motivations but by an effort to comply with the U.S. Voting Rights Act.

Democrats controlled the AZ Commission in the last cycle (2011). They gerrymandered state districts to hurt the Republicans. The SC oked gerrymandering with this decision.

If you are ok with Democratic gerrymandering that is fine but this decision allows Republicans to do it when they control things.

..."were drawn by an independent commission, complies with the Constitution’s “one person, one vote” principle."

FURTHER:

A group of Arizona residents contended that the commission actually had partisan motivations and packed white Republicans into a handful of districts to give Democrats an edge.

The high court said there was ample evidence that the commission wasn’t driven by partisan motivations but by an effort to comply with the U.S. Voting Rights Act. (emphasis mine)

<snip>

Conservative groups argued unsuccessfully in that case that the measure should be eligible voters, rather than total population. Had that argument succeeded, it would have marked a transformational change, reducing Hispanic voting clout and shifting some seats to more heavily Republican areas.

They packed Republicans into districts which allowed Democrats to compete in others. Gerrymandering.

the Court is unanimously signalling that they don't intend to get involved
in every redistricting and gerrymandering challenge

They would rather leave it to the states

Today's ruling kind of ignores 'partisan motivation' and supports the
independent commission

Hard to believe Justices Alito and Thomas would go along with this ruling

Do you really believe that the Supreme Court has a split along ideological lines? That is a show for the consumption of gullible people and to get them to vote for the establishment candidates of the two parties whenever an insurgent candidate shows up.

We are state of idiotic people that, for the most part, vote against our own best interests because the Republican toads in Maricopa (and by lesser extent Pinal) County control the entire state.

The idiocy is deep here, yes, but strong Democrats CAN get elected.
And, with this victory, more will!!
