RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) When Republican North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed a far-reaching LGBT law that critics called discriminatory, he said it wouldn't hurt the state's ability to attract jobs. It did.
When he signed an executive order seeking to lessen the law's impact, it upset some of his conservative supporters who said he "went too far" in bowing to national pressure. In yet another blow Tuesday, a federal appeals court that oversees North Carolina issued an opinion that now threatens part of the state law.
Through it all, McCrory has emerged perhaps reluctantly as the public face of the law and could become the biggest political loser as he suddenly finds himself in a tough re-election fight already swayed by the issue.
"He's in a tough spot," said Chris Cooper, a political science professor at Western Carolina University. "The executive order probably isn't going to mean a lot policy-wise. He's running the risk, no matter what he does, of alienating the average North Carolina voter. He's sort of stuck in the political middle."

(1,278 posts)His base of support was/is his and my home county, Mecklenburg (Charlotte). He has managed to do three things as Governor that he would have never allowed as Mayor.
1. Let the state attempt to take over Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
2. Ram the Interstate 77 Toll Lanes in North Mecklenburg down our throat, against the will of the people.
3. Override a City Council decision on Transgender bathrooms (HB2) and with rapid speed not seen from the NC General Assembly in a generation.
After what is now TimeWarner Cable Arena was steamrolled and the Trolley lines, you would think he would learn his lesson. I guess not.
Bottom Line: Most of the state doesn't like him, and he has now pissed off his support base. If there is few vote issues, AG Roy Cooper should be the next Governor. Not particularly liberal, but what passes for liberal in North Carolina outside of Asheville.
