Some kitty litter could trigger health problem in cats
Source: KCTV
Maverick is only a year old and the black and white cat is Tina Peerys pride and joy. When Maverick started having breathing issues, like any pet owner, she rushed him to the vet.
He got up on the table and collapsed. I was like, 'Oh my God! Something is wrong,' Peery said.
After two visits, totaling more than $700, Peery finally got an answer as to what was making her cat sick.
Veterinarians diagnosed Maverick with feline asthma, something that affects an estimated 1 percent of the domestic cat population. He now uses an inhaler, much like a human with asthma.

(205,466 posts)So I can see how it might bother a cat. Plus, it's awfully messy, can get into the floor. For my cat, I use the recycled paper kind, like they mentioned in the article as an alternative. It's not as messy, good odor control and it's softer for the cat. Though I usually get Fresh News since that's softer than Yesterday's News. My cat has no complaints!

One of our local rescues uses compressed wood pellets that are sold for animal bedding, and maybe stoves? It has no glue, moisture causes it to fall apart but it is easily cleaned.
Much cheaper than cat litter and not dusty.

(205,466 posts)Though it's little pellets, as well, not like he can read it!
And I guess some people scoop it, but it's not particularly scoopable. If I see something in it, I just dump the whole thing, generally once a day. But when I used the scoopable kind for my previous cats, I scooped those every day, as well. It's pretty heavy stuff, not like I have to fill the box. He's been really good about using his box from day one. I found him as a tiny kitten in a grocery store parking lot, the vet estimated seven weeks, so he'll turn two in June.

Poor sweet babies should not have to suffer. Thanks for the information (thinking in advance, because we still haven't replaced Mr. Mickey, but when we do, we want to start out right, and this is good info)

(1,724 posts)It is called The World's Best Cat Litter. I put it in the litter box and the cat would not use the box. Once I realized this, I quickly changed the litter back to the regular Tidy Cat stuff and wow did the cat ever run into that litter box fast! He did not like The World's Best Cat Litter that is for sure.
So much for The World's Best Cat litter eh? It is made out of wood and the poor cat was miserable. It is not cheap either.

(3,316 posts)I quit using it because I can't find it anymore except at very expensive pet supply stores

(38,001 posts)The pellets are compacted sawdust.
I use the pine pellets for the meanest cat in the world. Sometimes I stretch it out by adding corn meal. With her fur, she tracks litter no matter what. I'd rather deal with picking up stray pellets than clay litter or that horrid clumping stuff.

(531 posts)Makes me wheeze & sneeze when I'm cleaning out the trays, heaven knows what it does to my kitties.
So I switched to using chicken feed granules. An old friend recommended them, and they work a treat.
No dust, no smell, and they absorb all the odours and liquid very nicely.
