Two Dead After Rio 2016 Olympic Legacy Cycle Path Collapses
Source: Bloomberg
Two people have died after a 50-meter section of a recently completed cycle path built as part of Rio de Janeiros preparations to host the 2016 summer Olympics collapsed.
The 44.7 million reais ($12.7 million) cycle path, which only opened in mid-January, was hit by a strong wave before it collapsed while five people were taking a ride on Thursday, a public holiday in Brazil. Emergency services are at the scene, said a spokeswoman for Rios City Hall.
The two people were found dead after falling into the sea, the spokeswoman said. The tragedy highlights concerns over Rios readiness for the games that begin Aug. 5. Earlier this week, a group representing summer Olympic sports federations said they were dismayed by the amount of work left to do before the start of the event.

This doesn't look good for the standard of construction for the games' infrastructure.

(2,103 posts)Same goes for the World Cup, throw the UK a few £££s to bedazzle some stadiums and host it there permanently.
It'd be a net gain in money/time/lives pretty quickly.

(2,103 posts)If (1) or (2) can be answered, then there, with the caveat that it could realistically support a winter games for the next 100 years climatically.
(1) Does the winter olympics have an historic home?
(2) Where do the majority of the winter sports competed for originate from?
Coventina
(27,121 posts)Most of the sports originate from Scandinavia & northern Europe.
I'd support a permanent home in a climate-suitable place, but that might be a bigger fight, since there's no "obvious" choice, like Greece for the Summer games.

(23,344 posts)Maybe the swimming leg of a triathlon is in the polluted bay, not sure.
Yeah, swim the bay, then go on a series of Cipro pills. Even then, there could be nasties in the water that antibiotics won't touch. Parasites, etc.
