Prince Dead at 57
Source: TMZ
The artist known as Prince has died ... TMZ has learned. He was 57.
Prince's body was discovered at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota early Thursday morning.
Multiple sources connected to the singer confirmed he had passed.
The singer -- full name Prince Rogers Nelson -- had a medical emergency on April 15th that forced his private jet to make an emergency landing in Illinois. But he appeared at a concert the next day to assure his fans he was okay. His people told TMZ he was battling the flu.

Glad to hear that the reports were incorrect.

I've managed to see a lot of great acts in my life (although I'm a little too young to have seen some of the very best), and I never managed to get to a Prince show, assuming there'd be more opportunities, and now I never will. I did see Bowie, so in terms of the 2016 losses of amazing artists, at least I had that one covered.
Gone too soon...

(2,103 posts)Singer Prince has died at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota at the age of 57, his publicist tells AP.
Police were called to a medical emergency at his estate earlier on Thursday, US media reported.
Prince became a global superstar in the 1980s, with albums such as 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O' the Times.
He sold more than 100 million records during his career.

Prince, the legendary and innovative music artist, has died at age 57. TMZ reported Thursday that the Carver County Sheriff's department responded to an emergency call at the singer's Paisley Park studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota at 9:43 that morning. They waited to reveal the identity until after they'd notified his next of kin. A rep for the singer confirmed his death to the Associated Press.
A week ago, the singer's private plane made an emergency landing after a gig in the middle of the night in Moline, Illinois so he could go to a hospital. Varying reports said he was suffering dehydration and was getting over the flu. He was released after three hours and flew home, where he was recovering at home. He'd canceled some dates of his "Piano and a Microphone" tour in early April because of the flu, TMZ previously reported.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

(3,569 posts)Wow. I'm devastated. What a huge loss, an artist who was still creating, still relevant. My mind is blown. I am so glad that I went to see him during the Purple Rain tour when Larry called and told me to come down, there are a million tickets here. The Cow Palace. Until then all I knew about the guy was that he was stripper music. I knew nothing about his music at all but I jammed down there anyway (free tickets you know). The guy destroyed me. Next night too. Incredible guitar player and the band was sooooo funky. It was like Hendrix, but a fully realized Hendrix, a much more sexual Hendrix. Just the way he played, and used the guitar as a prop was incredible. Never saw him after that, but those shows will forever stick in my mind. Damn.double damn.
When I was selling photos I had a great print of those shows with Prince sexually licking his guitar. Incredible photo. Wish I could find that photographer, Ron Delaney from Berkeley, but have tried many times with no success.

(18,318 posts)As some have noted, his Super Bowl show exceeded all those before and after -- in the rain, yet. The party I attended was skeptical, thinking he was a has-been. Half way through his act, they were shut down and ready for the last half. As I recall, the old vaudeville shadow show even shut down the t.v. commentators...
Some consider him a main link in the vitality of American Pop music, coming on when a lot of schlock was clogging the airwaves, and Rap was establishing its nduring foothold. IMO, he did what Motown did with pop: Establish a powerful African American presence in the face of other dominant music trends like the British Invasion. Only Prince seemed to do it single-handedly. The only artist able to compete with that influence was Michal Jackson.
And Prince was still at it. Rest in Skadi's arms.
