Prince Dead at 57

Source: TMZ

The artist known as Prince has died ... TMZ has learned. He was 57.
Prince's body was discovered at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota early Thursday morning.
Multiple sources connected to the singer confirmed he had passed.
The singer -- full name Prince Rogers Nelson -- had a medical emergency on April 15th that forced his private jet to make an emergency landing in Illinois. But he appeared at a concert the next day to assure his fans he was okay. His people told TMZ he was battling the flu.

And on a selfish note, I never did manage to see him live and I am just kicking myself. I've managed to see a lot of great acts in my life (although I'm a little too young to have seen some of the very best), and I never managed to get to a Prince show, assuming there'd be more opportunities, and now I never will. I did see Bowie, so in terms of the 2016 losses of amazing artists, at least I had that one covered.

Gone too soon...

Sigh.

Singer Prince dies suddenly at 57

Singer Prince has died at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota at the age of 57, his publicist tells AP.

Police were called to a medical emergency at his estate earlier on Thursday, US media reported.

Prince became a global superstar in the 1980s, with albums such as 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O' the Times.

He sold more than 100 million records during his career.

Prince Dead at 57
Iconic singer leaves behind prolific, groundbreaking canon
By Kory Grow April 21, 2016

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/prince-dead-at-57-20160421

Prince, the legendary and innovative music artist, has died at age 57. TMZ reported Thursday that the Carver County Sheriff's department responded to an emergency call at the singer's Paisley Park studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota at 9:43 that morning. They waited to reveal the identity until after they'd notified his next of kin. A rep for the singer confirmed his death to the Associated Press.

A week ago, the singer's private plane made an emergency landing after a gig in the middle of the night in Moline, Illinois so he could go to a hospital. Varying reports said he was suffering dehydration and was getting over the flu. He was released after three hours and flew home, where he was recovering at home. He'd canceled some dates of his "Piano and a Microphone" tour in early April because of the flu, TMZ previously reported.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

That SuperBowl halftime show was one for the ages. BEST EVER.
My very first date with my now husband of almost 30 years was seeing the movie Purple Rain at the 309n Drive-In in Montgomeryville, PA.
Needless to day... we had to go and see the movie again. The soundtrack of my courtship.

My Dad passed five days after Bowie and now the Purple One is gone. What an emotional year.

If you never heard Charlie Murphy tell the (apparently mostly) true story of his basketball game against Prince on The Chappelle Show, it is worth watching!

Wow. I'm devastated. What a huge loss, an artist who was still creating, still relevant. My mind is blown. I am so glad that I went to see him during the Purple Rain tour when Larry called and told me to come down, there are a million tickets here. The Cow Palace. Until then all I knew about the guy was that he was stripper music. I knew nothing about his music at all but I jammed down there anyway (free tickets you know). The guy destroyed me. Next night too. Incredible guitar player and the band was sooooo funky. It was like Hendrix, but a fully realized Hendrix, a much more sexual Hendrix. Just the way he played, and used the guitar as a prop was incredible. Never saw him after that, but those shows will forever stick in my mind. Damn.double damn.
When I was selling photos I had a great print of those shows with Prince sexually licking his guitar. Incredible photo. Wish I could find that photographer, Ron Delaney from Berkeley, but have tried many times with no success.

I am absolutely devastated by this loss. I am still recovering from David Bowie and now Prince is gone from what seems like a bad flu??!! I CANNOT!!! David Bowie and Prince were the two artists who were the biggest part of the soundtrack of my adolescence. I am absolutely heartbroken. Just recently when he had to be rushed to the hospital and his name started trending my heart dropped and I was like phew!!! So for him to have now died I am just so so upset. RIP Sweet Prince. Another legend gone too soon.

He was playing here in SF at the Cow Palace. I managed to work my way up to the front of the stage right in front of him. He was TINY. He had his shirt off and was wearing lace pants. They were see-through. He had freckles all over his back. And he moved and danced more easily in a pair of 4" high heeled boots than any woman I knew.

Oh this is going to be a hard one...

Then it was announced that he "had the flu" and was released shortly afterward and he returned home.

So, I guess maybe it was pneumonia or some further complication of a respiratory infection.

Not that it really matters... I'm just talking so I don't get any more bummed.

*sigh*

Rock on, where ever you are once and future man called "Prince".

As some have noted, his Super Bowl show exceeded all those before and after -- in the rain, yet. The party I attended was skeptical, thinking he was a has-been. Half way through his act, they were shut down and ready for the last half. As I recall, the old vaudeville shadow show even shut down the t.v. commentators...

Some consider him a main link in the vitality of American Pop music, coming on when a lot of schlock was clogging the airwaves, and Rap was establishing its nduring foothold. IMO, he did what Motown did with pop: Establish a powerful African American presence in the face of other dominant music trends like the British Invasion. Only Prince seemed to do it single-handedly. The only artist able to compete with that influence was Michal Jackson.

And Prince was still at it. Rest in Skadi's arms.

Apr 2016

Since I don't happen to have a television, have all the major networks pulled away from their regular broadcasts to cover this? As if the genuinely sad event of this man's early death is somehow more important than anything else?

That's what happened when Michael Jackson died, and I was appalled at the priorities on view.

May he rest in peace.

This would actually make sense. I read he needed a double hip replacement but wouldn't get the surgery because, as a Jehovah's witness, he couldn't have a blood transfusion. He had to be in a lot of pain.

Damn, Damn, DAMN! I saw him at the L.A. Forum 5 years ago on this date for my birthday. I remember telling myself that I missed out on seeing Michael in concert and he's gone. Prince was the only one left as far as who I considered a legend from my generation and there was NO WAY I was gonna miss this concert. I'm so glad I got the opportunity. Now Prince is gone - too soon at 57.

This death is shocking to me because he lived a healthy vegan lifestyle and hasn't visually aged since the 1980s. He seemed forever young. It just wasn't expected. This one hurts...

I've been reading all day and keep thinking, this can't be real.

Prince is one of the most talented entertainers EVER in his singing, his dancing, his playing numerous instruments fluently, his looks, stage presence, giving way over 100% for the fans, his writing, style, and I could go on and on.

I am fortunate to have been to two of his concerts, one in Oakland, ca. and San Francisco. They were both wonderful.

I love you dear Prince. We'll never see the likes of him again.

171. Prince and Victoria Wood having really awkward conversation

http://newsthump.com/2016/04/22/prince-and-victoria-wood-having-really-awkward-conversation/

Victoria Wood has just offered Prince a custard cream and he’s got entirely the wrong idea, we can report.

The two met in the queue for the afterlife and quickly discovered they have little in common beyond an interest in being spanked on the bottom with a copy of Woman’s Weekly, although one of them thinks of it as a joke whilst the other views it as a fairly run of the mill Saturday night.

Attempting to break an uncomfortable silence Wood then offered Prince the popular biscuit, leaving her bright red and flustered by his reply.

“All I said was ‘would you like a custard cream’ and he said something which most family magazines would consider unprintable,” Wood told bystanders. “Things weren’t improved when I asked if he’d prefer a fig roll, a chocolate finger or a pink wafer,” she added. “And you don’t want to know what he said when I asked if he’d like to nibble my party ring.
