NBA’s Silver: 2017 All-Star Game will be moved from Charlotte if LGBT law is unchanged

Source: Charlotte Observer

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reiterated Thursday that if North Carolina’s LBGT law remains unchanged, the 2017 All-Star Game would have to be moved from Charlotte.

Silver’s comments on the state’s controversial House Bill 2 came at the Associated Press Sports Editors’ commissioner meetings Thursday, according to attendees. Earlier in the day, Silver again called the law “problematic” for the league as it stands, but he said he’s confident state lawmakers will “do the right thing.”

Speaking on ESPN’s Mike & Mike morning radio show, Silver said the NBA is more interested in working with local businesses and governments to effect change in the law, rather than in setting ultimatums about the 2017 All-Star Game, which is to take place in Charlotte.

“They know what’s at stake in terms of the All-Star Game. But at least at the moment, constructive engagement on our part is the best way to go as opposed to putting a gun to their head and saying ‘do this or else,’” Silver said.

But I'm still angry at Silver for allowing teams to put advertisements on their uniforms in 2017.

If Silver and the NBA really cared about equality they would announce that NBA teams would only play in venues with gender neutral restrooms. All they would have to do is change the signs.

they easily have the power to make huge progress by simply making all their venues' restrooms gender neutral. Wouldn't even cost them money. Just change the signs.

Okay I was waiting for something from the NBA although it sounds a little wishy-washy. Is anything less than a total repeal enough? Not in my mind, especially since the law prevents the citizenry from access to the courts for redress of their grievances, and imposes a big government block on local control (is that against their own platform?).

The Republicans are destroying their brand, by being vile. So in the words of our President... "Please proceed..."

Like all NBA commissioners, Adam's Silver's only human.

But beginning with the Donald Sterling scandal - and his quick decision to ban the oaf - Silver has proven time and again that doing the right thing is important to him.

Good for him.

Besides, Silver will have plenty of opportunities to disappoint us in the future.

The GOP will be screaming to energize the Rw to vote to ensure a RW Republican majority to ensure that DEMs will be too weak to overturn HB-8. The pressure needs to be on McCrory now, not later.

in NC's General Assembly. McCrory is vulnerable sure, but most of the GOP General Assembly is fine.

The 2010 election will be hurting us for a long time.

It's easy to take away the All Star game, no problem. The difficulty is when you have an actual franchise in the very city/stadium that Bruce Springsteen/Pearl Jam & others are cancelling shows in. It looks half-assed to take the All Star game but you still have a franchise & the owner is Michael Jordan.

He's in a real quandary.

However, as shitty as Charlotte's team is, and as crappy as Michael Jordan is an owner, they will never see post season play.

NBA can't force a team to move to a new city I believe.

The Hornets are in the playoffs this year. Down 2 games to 0 to Miami but it looks like Charlotte is up by 17 after the 3rd quarter today.

Not a fan and yes they are a horrible team with an owner who is actually worse at that job than he is at not being a complete a-hole.

There's still a Charlotte franchise, they just never play any games in NC.

Alternately, you can do what soccer does: make them play in an empty arena, with no media.
