Colorado Court: Ruling Stands That Baker Can't Cite Religion

Source: Associated Press

The Colorado Supreme Court refused Monday to take up the case of a suburban Denver baker who would not make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, letting stand a lower court's ruling that the Masterpiece Cakeshop owner cannot cite his Christian beliefs in refusing service.

The American Civil Liberties Union applauded the development.

"The highest court in Colorado today affirmed that no one should be turned away from a public-facing business because of who they are or who they love," Ria Tabacco Mar, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union's LGBT Project who argued the case, said in a statement. "We all have a right to our personal beliefs, but we do not have a right to impose those beliefs on others and discriminate against them."

Tabacco Mar had argued on behalf of Charlie Craig and David Mullins, who had been refused service by baker Jack Phillips.

I'll believe that a business has religious rights and beliefs when the business (not the owner or employees) consumes Holy Communion.

I just can't understand a business owner who'd engage in this kind of petty, vindictive, immoral (as in, passing judgement), hateful, hurtful behavior. Talk about stooooopid business savvy, too.

Religious nutcases like this have no legal ground to stand on, and I'm happy to see them smacked down.

Will the baker suffer any monetary consequences for the harassment and for wasting the legal system's time? One can only hope.

If you really, really, really want to be an asshole who won't make a cake for teh gays™, turn your "public business" into a "private club".

Make $5 you normally charge for cakes be an annual membership fee. Don't offer membership to teh gays™.

At this point, I think anyone doing this is actually fishing for a giant pile of donations from bigots, not expressing their religious belief.

Why there are so many ignorant bigoted people in this country . I don't understand why they are proud of their ignorance. But they are. They fly the KKK flag on their house. They post Trump signs in their yard and he's not even running for anything here anymore, Ohio already voted. They advertise their ignorance and they wear it on their sleeve. They hate minorities because the fox news and hate radio has drummed it into their confidence for 25 years. They think it's OK.

I am terrified of the future because I don't have a way to hide.

I'm so familiar with Ohio and its various cultures and people. I used to live in a county where GOP was practically branded on the asses of every resident.

There is always the Left Coast...or Vermont. These are places where diversity is, in general, valued.

If i was in the business, I wouldn't care if the people coming into my bakery were Little Green Men from Mars, if they had the money, I'd bake them a cake any damn way they wanted it.

Two guys, two gals, man, woman, whoever, you show up pick out what you want and I'd make you the best damn cake you ever saw.

What type of idiot turns away paying customers?

I mean, that's a special kind of stupid right there.

Out here, we call it "S*** for brains".

I guess if one is looking for public martyrdom and fame, one should be stupid in business matters. No need to simply bake the damned cake, and then quietly go into a closet to pray to Jesus for forgiveness, which has already been promised to believers.

The bakery in Oregon pioneered this bigotry thing. So far, they've raked in one-half million in donations, but have paid out $144,000 to the victims, lost their bakery, and have to pay attorney/court costs. They're appealing (good luck with that).

I have a healthy DISrespect for these nutcases and their beliefs.

be allowed to refuse business, but I must add that were I getting married and the bakery I wanted to bake my cake didn't approve of the kind of person I was marrying, I don't think I'd want them to have my business.

Or forbidden clothing mixtures by the employees that the Bible forbids?

Hopefully there would be no protests at the front door by real Christians.

If I hear people inside the business discussing politics or religion, I leave. Without buying. If you are open to the public, shut up and do your job.
