O'Malley endorses Van Hollen in Senate race

Source: The Hill

Former Democratic presidential candidate Martin O'Malley is throwing his support behind Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a day before Tuesday's Democratic Senate primary in Maryland.

"I stood with Barbara Mikulski in her historic campaign for U.S. Senate in 1986, and I’m standing with Chris tomorrow on election day," O'Malley, who worked on the retiring Democratic senator's campaign 30 years ago, wrote to supporters on Monday.

"I hope you will join me in voting for a progressive who will get things done for the state we love," O'Malley added.

Van Hollen held a 6-point lead over Democratic primary rival Rep. Donna Edwards in a poll released earlier this month.

In spite of the fact that he's the Dem party's fair-haired boy, and I don't want to stir up anything here, he was not born in the U.S., he was born in Karachi, Pakistan (due to his family's business there, I think; a parent may have worked for the State Department.)

'His father was a Foreign Service officer who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs (1969–72) and U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives (1972–76);[5] and his mother worked in the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department, where she served as chief of the intelligence bureau for South Asia.[6][7][8] He spent parts of his early life in Pakistan, Turkey, India, and Sri Lanka.[9][7] He returned to the United States for his junior year of high school, and attended Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, where his grandfather once taught.[7]'

Have to be born IN the U.S.

by Mary Brigid McManamon January 12
Mary Brigid McManamon is a constitutional law professor at Widener University’s Delaware Law School.

'Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) is not a natural-born citizen and therefore is not eligible to be president or vice president of the United States.

The Constitution provides that “No person except a natural born Citizen .?.?. shall be eligible to the Office of President.” The concept of “natural born” comes from common law, and it is that law the Supreme Court has said we must turn to for the concept’s definition. On this subject, common law is clear and unambiguous. The 18th-century English jurist William Blackstone, the preeminent authority on it, declared natural-born citizens are “such as are born within the dominions of the crown of England,” while aliens are “such as are born out of it.” The key to this division is the assumption of allegiance to one’s country of birth. The Americans who drafted the Constitution adopted this principle for the United States. James Madison, known as the “father of the Constitution,” stated, “It is an established maxim that birth is a criterion of allegiance. .?.?. place is the most certain criterion; it is what applies in the United States.”

Cruz is, of course, a U.S. citizen. As he was born in Canada, he is not natural-born. His mother, however, is an American, and Congress has provided by statute for the naturalization of children born abroad to citizens. Because of the senator’s parentage, he did not have to follow the lengthy naturalization process that aliens without American parents must undergo. Instead, Cruz was naturalized at birth. This provision has not always been available. For example, there were several decades in the 19th century when children of Americans born abroad were not given automatic naturalization.' >>>

It's an issue that has to be decided by the Supreme Court.

MIGHT be if born on a U.S. installation of some sort, diplomatic or military, but even that would have to be litigated to confirm.

I was INFORMING people of the status of the law.

IF/when the Supremes confirm the position of the author of the article, that one MUST be born IN the U.S. to serve as POTUS, everyone will know, and hopefully understand. But those who don't want to understand, won't, I guess. THEN the status of McCain's birth can be ascertained. Cruz's is pretty clear, like VanHollen's, they were NOT born IN the U.S.

Propaganda? How very republican of YOU.

Guess O'Malley is more establishment than I thought. This may explain why his presidential campaign went over like a lead balloon.

than Bernie. He got more progressive things accomplished as governor than Bernie did in Congress. Although it was not Bernie's fault that the Republicans would not even consider anything progressive.

Committee on Science, Space and Technology overseeing contracts that Lockheed martin bids on. Just because someone is called the most progressive, doesn't make it so. Van Hollen will make a good Senator.

I like Edwards, but Van Hollen is slated for a leadership position. He's the better choice.
