More than 280 emergency workers battle Ulster County wildfire
Source: ABC News
ELLENVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) Despite Tuesdays rain, a wildfire at the Sams Point Preserve in Ulster County continues to burn.
More than 100 fire personnel from state environmental agencies, four EMS agencies and 32 Ulster and Dutchess County fire departments are working to bring the flames under control.
The wildfire started Saturday and has currently consumed more than 2000 acres in the preserve. While the fire has advanced and increased in intensity, no structures have been impacted and no injuries have been reported.
State officials are working closely with local officials to battle this fire and keep New Yorkers safe, said Governor Cuomo. We will continue to take all necessary actions to extinguish this wildfire, and I urge everyone in the area to stay clear and informed with the latest information. Thanks to all of the first responders who have been tirelessly battling this wildfire.

(12,471 posts)I pass by Main St. New Paltz, where you can see the smoke from the fire. It has been raining all day, and I didn't see any smoke on the way home, so I guess it's out.
A co-worker lives in Cragsmoor, where the fire actually happened, on Sam's Point, and he has some eerie pictures of it.
This area is quite out of the way, known for its cliffs, and has lots of climbers in the summer. The other areas of the mountain range have a lot of small pine trees that are native to the area. These things tend to survive these fires, which happen about once every 3-4 years. This one just got rather large quickly. Probably because of the dryness of the area in early spring, which is not very unusual.
Funny that the news report shows smoke, and the pictures are of pretty clear sky. It has not been clear today, and when I drove past my vantage point in New Paltz, I could see no smoke at around 6:45.
