Bundy attorney: Feds turned down proposed plea deal

Updated 6:34 pm, Wednesday, April 27, 2016

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Lawyers for Ammon Bundy say the leader of the Oregon wildlife refuge occupation offered after his arrest to plead guilty if charges against other defendants were dismissed, but the deal was rejected.

The assertion is made in a pre-trial motion filed in federal court on Wednesday.

Bundy was arrested by FBI agents and Oregon state troopers on Jan. 26. More than two dozen people have been arrested for the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge that began Jan. 2 and ended with surrender of the last four on Feb. 11.

Bundy attorney Mike Arnold says his client offered on Jan. 29 to plead guilty to a federal conspiracy charge if charges against the others were dropped, and the proposal was rejected a day before the last occupiers gave up.

Why would any attorney with half a brain expect the feds to accept such a proposal. They've pretty much got them all dead to rights, and there is no incentive for prosecutors to deal.

I'm sure he didn't expect the feds to agree, but if that was what his client wanted, then that's what he had to do.

Are you saying the feds should have accepted the offer? If so, why?

"I plead guilty to a conspiracy. That I did alone, since no one else is being charged."

Must have taken the Feds like 15-20 microseconds to mull it over and reject it. Even a legal ignoranmous like me knows it'd be stupid to take it.
Get em all. The Fed's case is as strong as the defense's is weak.
Fed: the defendants did X, Y, and Z. Here's where they said A, B, and C. The physical evidence is in those 4 dump trucks parked out front of the courthouse. We'll grab the forklifts and start bringing it in.
Defense: you bastards got no right to hold us. Under Job 23:12, or something. The defense rests, your (snicker) "honor".

Ammon Bundy defense attorney. These Militia people are not going to see any bail or conditional release until trial.

I hope they Hastert all of them! (I'm sure you've heard by now that the judge gave the former Speaker a longer sentence than the prosecution recommended.)

Ten gang members murder someone and one of them tells the police to release everyone else and he'll plead guilty. Right wingers would be okay with that?

....is to plead guilty on all counts in exchange for a lighter sentence.

Of course, that makes him look like a hypocrite and a fraud to the others who "sympathize" with his "cause".

He's painted himself into a corner.

There has to be an incentive for the prosecution and that just doesn't exist.

Very rarely has a crime been so well documented.
