California lawmakers reject John Wayne Day after debate

Updated 2:38 pm, Thursday, April 28, 2016

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers have defeated a resolution intended to honor John Wayne after opponents challenged what they say are racist statements by the late actor.

Republican State Assemblyman Matthew Harper of Huntington Beach sought to declare May 26, 2016, as John Wayne Day to mark the day the actor was born.

An Orange County airport is already named after him. The bill, ACR137, is the sort of resolution that lawmakers frequently pass.

But this one triggered a 20-minute debate Thursday before failing, 35-20, to what Harper called "the orthodoxy of political correctness."

Pulled strings to get out of going to WW II, while making a ton of movies where he was depicted as fighting bravely. Lots of other Hollywood actors risked (and ended) their careers and lives to go.

Then this blowhard had the audacity to roll over on his Hollywood coworkers during the McCarthy era, getting many of them blacklisted.

And he was a terrible actor, by anyone's set of standards.

Now THIS guy... this guy was the real deal.

I never liked a single John Wayne film. I like western films and tv shows but I just can't name one John Wayne film that i honestly enjoyed.

I've watched a video of it twice. I don't see what people think is so great about it.

The Searchers (film)

Maybe now that I have a widescreen TV it will leave a different impression on yet another viewing.

YMMV.

But he was, by all accounts, a kind and decent man. A curiosity that simply does not exist in today's Republican party.

It seems to have gone on for decades, they would talk, fight and fish together. Think about it, those three on the same boat with no one else on the boat.

By the way, John Wayne did his best acting under John Ford, Ford would put Wayne in the role Wayne could do well and Wayne ALWAYS did what Ford told him to do when it came to acting. Wayne's performances under other Directors were almost never as good (True Grit is an exception to that rule and from a performance point of view I like Wayne's Alamo movie). I suspect to much deference to Wayne, for he was the box office draw from the 1950s till AFTER his death.

Please note, one of the comments about John Wayne's movie was Wayne had more time on Screen then almost every other actor in any movie made at that time period (The biggest exception was Elvis Presley in the few Movies Elvis made, the makers of those movies knew what the audience wanted to see and that was Elvis, it hurt his movies, just like it hurt Wayne's movies).

but that is because his family donated the land/tideland to the county. He used to stop here on party trips in his yacht.

Other than a donation, what reason could there be for naming things after him - the characters he played? This is confusing make-believe with reality. Harper is confused.

St. Ronnie being the other one, of course.

If they name one more public landmark after draft-dodger Wayne, they'll have to rename the county after him as well.

Home of the one and only Mike Carona (the corrupt sheriff O.C. Republicans were grooming to succeed Governor Gropenegger). Perhaps they could name it after him.

From article, Wayne's quote:

We can't all of a sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to the leadership of the blacks. I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.

So State Assemblyman Harper "Republican idiot" supports a racist republican idiot.

John Wayne was racist fascist republican douche-bag. He also was a major cheerleader of the Vietnam War.

"What happened was that America looked back for someone from the '30s or '40s; they were actually looking for someone like John Wayne. But John Wayne was no longer available, so they had to settle for someone like Ronald Ray-gun."

You know, now that I think of it, there's a way to do something good and amusing at the same time. There are hundreds of government-funded buildings and places named for Ronald Reagan. Why don't we start naming them for the person that the naive people of 1980 really wanted to be their President, John Wayne?

Then, in five or six years, when the politicians of the next generation ask, "who the f&* is John Wayne, anyway?," we can rename them for someone who wasn't the addled pawn of political criminals, who didn't drive the US into permanent debt to cut taxes for the rich and who didn't drive the insane into the streets.

He always called Wayne 'Marion' and called him a draft dodging coward. He wouldn't watch his movies, and said he walked like he had a pants load of shit. I agree. Wayne DID walk like he had a pants load of shit. Maybe like Toilet Ted, he shit his pants to stay out of the army and never stopped.

I heard that David Niven wouldn't make a movie with him.
