U.S. women may soon be required to register for the military draft

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - American women could be required to register for the military draft as soon as next year under an amendment to a defense policy bill passed by a House of Representatives committee on Thursday, and supported by some key members of the Senate.

The House Armed Services Committee voted 32-30 to pass an amendment to the $602 billion National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, that would require women aged 18-26 to register for the selective service, once all combat roles are open to women.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced last year that all combat positions would be open to women, which immediately prompted calls that women should be required to register. The U.S. military has been an all-volunteer force since the 1970s, but young men have been required to register in case the draft is reactivated.

Republican Representative Duncan Hunter, a former Marine who does not want women drafted and opposes their inclusion in special operations or infantry units, said he introduced the amendment to start a discussion.

Sorry but this drives me up a wall. Yes I get that most spawn of bankers and billionaires/millionaires are assholes, not all of them share their parent's philosophy. My dad is an ultra conservative republican. Should I have to go to war because of his beliefs? No, he should have to go. Same goes for the bankers themselves. I don't care how old they are, make the draft apply to everyone. Especially those that vote for it.

I'm pretty sure I know many old folks who would volunteer for the military just for the health care.

They told us when they failed to pass ERA was that they couldn't pass it because it would mean women would be drafted and we'd have gay marriage.

We have marriage equality already. When are we going to pass the ERA for women?

9. End The Draft

Yes, this is partly because there is an effort to include women in the draft. However, I do not think we need a draft. The military has not drafted anyone since the early 70's. Why are males still required to sign up for the draft. Clearly, there is very little that would cause the military to draft young men who do not want to join the military. So, why not just end the draft registration requirement.

I don't think anyone should have to sign up but if there is no ERA women should sit home or go to jail until there is.

No F'ing way.

One-third of women in military service are raped or assaulted by fellow soldiers . This makes military service more dangerous for women than for men. I'm opposed to any involuntary service, men or women.

We didn't have it during the Gerald Ford years, and we didn't need it. It's just a waste of money that would be better spent on something else.

This amendment was introduced by Duncan Hunter (A-hole-CA), a former Marine who opposes having women in the military and who opposes the recent move by DOD to begin removing gender restrictions in combat service.

He introduced the amendment to try to spark a damaging debate about women in combat, but when Democrats on the committee spotted it they saw a chance to screw Hunter over by supporting the measure. The amendment passed 32-30, with Hunter voting against and failing to stop his own amendment.

I hope they name the first all-female barracks building at Parris Island after him.

If they want to draft people into the army to fight another stupid war for oil, we baby boomers know what to do about it. We've had some past experience with the draft and another pointless war.
