Michigan lawmakers approve key parts of hardline anti-abortion law package

Michigan lawmakers have voted in favour of key parts of anti-abortion laws that pro-choice campaigners claim could shut down most abortion clinics in the state.

The state's House of Representatives voted by 70 to 39 in favour of the main new piece of proposed legislation on Wednesday, with two more bills still awaiting votes. The law is now set to move to the state's Senate in September and is likely to put Michigan are the forefront of America's battle over abortion rights.

The move has been described as one of the most hardline recent attempts at passing anti-abortion legislation in America and its backers have been accused of rushing the process forward without adequate public hearings.

The package of bills as a whole aims to introduce tough new insurance and licensing requirements for clinics and ban abortions that take place more than 20 weeks after conception, except for when it might save a woman's life. It also wants to regulate the use of abortion pill Mifepristone and set new guidelines for the disposal of a foetus. However, the bill covering the 20 weeks issue has not yet been voted on.

Detroit lawmaker calls for sex boycott as Michigan House approves anti-abortion bill

LANSING — All 64 Republicans and six Democrats in the state House joined forces Wednesday to approve sweeping anti-abortion legislation.

The bill would increase insurance and regulations on abortion clinics, regulate the disposal of fetal remains, prohibit the use of teleconferences to prescribe abortion medication and make it a crime to coerce a woman into having an abortion.

Michigan Catholic Conference Policy Advocate Rebecca Mastee said “holding clinics to minimum standards and working to protect the more than 60% of women who are coerced into having an abortion should not be controversial if the safety of women is of concern.”

The six Democrats who voted for the bill were Charles Brunner of Bay City, Paul Clemente of Lincoln Park, Bob Constan of Dearborn Heights, George Darany of Dearborn, Richard LeBlanc of Westland and Lesia Liss of Warren.

When a woman WANTS her baby, and some slime ball coerces her into an abortion, dirtball needs to do some time.

Choice Ave is a two way street.

You have so much respect for the male gender that you do believe that husbands and boyfriends never force a woman to have an abortion when she wanted to keep the child, just like some would do the opposite - carry a child she does not want?

Or are you scared that acknowledging this would jeopardize freedom of choice, so these women need to take one for the team?

A woman's CHOICE is hers, even if you don't like that choice.

lean Republican ranking on one poll from EPIC-MRA. EPIC-MRA is the only polling firm to find Romney leading in MI in the last 2 years. All other polls show Obama leading.

Corporations taking over schools, parks and prisons. Local elections mean nothing. Its a sham, a stink hole of the world. Crime is up, taxes (on people) are up. They did legalize firecrackers though, now every city and town sounds like Baghdad. Its a good place to stay away from.

the systematic destruction of a Blue state. It is tragic and very scary and there has been nothing progressives in the state have been able to do about it. Michigan is my home, and will be my home after these creatures are gone or subdued.
