Google autonomous car project teams with FiatChrysler

Source: AFP

San Francisco (AFP) - Google parent Alphabet on Tuesday announced that it has partnered with Fiat Chrysler in a major expansion of its fleet of self-driving vehicles.

The Google autonomous test fleet would be more than doubled with the addition of 100 new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans, with the companies aiming to have some on the road by the end of this year.

The collaboration with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) marked the first time that the California-based Internet giant has worked directly with an automaker to build self-driving vehicles.

"FCA will design the minivans so it's easy for us to install our self-driving systems, including the computers that hold our self-driving software, and the sensors that enable our software to see what's on the road around the vehicle," the car team said in a post at Google+ social network.

that the big money types will opt to have their private jets automated very soon. Follow the Money.

Then Cargo Ships, yachts etc. Why invest in the instruments of the plebes

Jets kind of already are. Auto-pilot and collision-detection pretty much do this now...they just still require someone to be in the cockpit.

Self-driving barges and cargo ships are in the works. There was an article about it last month, they project to have them in service by the middle of the next decade. The same technology would work for yachts, though I'd assume like planes, you'd still need a helmsman...you just wouldn't need any other crew really beyond that.
