Rolling Stones Ask Trump to Stop Playing Their Songs

Source: Associated Press

The Rolling Stones have asked presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to stop playing their songs at his campaign events.

In a statement Wednesday, the rock band said they have not given permission to the Trump campaign to use their songs and "have requested that they cease all use immediately."

A Trump campaign spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump, an avid music fan, has featured Rolling Stones songs at his rallies for months as part of a diverse soundtrack that includes Elton John, opera and classic rock songs. The Rolling Stones' 1969 classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was a popular song choice for his events.

Glad to see this. I was sad to hear their music played at one of his "events". Their music does not represent the nature of these rallies, etc.!

However, no one has actually pressed Trump about it. Robbins also acknowledges, in fairness to Trump, that it is pretty difficult to be a real estate developer in New York City without coming in contact with organized crime. The question is really even given his ambitions, did Trump do no more than was necessary with the Mafia? Also, does he continue to rub elbows with Mafia dons? and, if so, would his Mafia ties influence presidential policy? Those are question that I would have as a consumer of news and in the endeavor to be an informed citizen.

I would guess that most musicians, like all creatives, are more liberal. That's why the few who are not stand out.

Yet most must stand by hopelessly and watch and hear their song being used for political endorsements they abhor. There really should be some exemption if a song is to be used for political purposes, that permission is required.

The Rolling Stones are definitely not Republican endorsers.

If it can be shown he's turning a profit on the event, I think the Stones (or whoever owns the licenses to the songs) would be well within their rights to, at a minimum, sue for a % of the profits.

Much as I like the Stones and hate Drumpf, I don't think it's within a musical artists rights to demand their music not be played at a non-profit event, just because the artist doesn't care for the person the event is held to honor. That would be taking things a bit too far, imho, and I don't think the law/courts allows for stopping it.
