Sheldon Adelson Willing to Spend $100 Million to Beat Obama

Source: US News

June 14, 2012

Billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson just donated $10 million to Mitt Romney's Super PAC, and told Forbes he is willing to spend $100 million or more to ensure President Obama is not re-elected.

Adelson is by far the biggest political donor in American politics. Before this latest contribution, he had given more than $26 million to Super PACs in 2012, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. That includes the $21.5 million he gave to Newt Gingrich's Super PAC, which single-handedly kept the former House Speaker's presidential campaign alive. He's also given $1.3 million to state politics over the years.

While the amount Adelson is willing to spend is staggering, $100 million in political contributions would not put a dent in his largesse. His $25 billion net worth makes him the world's fourteenth-richest person, according to Forbes. To Adelson, $100 million is less than one half of one percent of his net worth—spending it would be the equivalent of a family worth $250,000 spending $1,000.

Adelson's wealth comes from his casino empire in Las Vegas and Southeast Asia. His company, The Las Vegas Sands Corp., brought in $9.4 billion in 2011, according to financial filings.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/bribes-chinese-mob-ties-alleged-casino-gingrich-money/story?id=15455918#.TyXe_YHgdJl

The casino company run by the principal financial backer of Newt Gingrich's presidential bid, Sheldon Adelson, has been under criminal investigation for the last year by the Department of Justice and the Securities Exchange Commission for alleged bribery of foreign officials, according to corporate documents.

In a separate civil lawsuit, a former executive of the company has alleged that Adelson ordered him to keep quiet about sensitive issues at the Sands casinos on the Chinese island of Macau, including the casinos' alleged "involvement with Chinese organized crime groups, known as Triads, connected to the junket business." The triads -- Chinese organized crime syndicates -- are allegedly involved in organizing high stakes gambling junkets for wealthy Chinese travelers.

edit: Note that Adelson is here identified as a major Gingrich backer. Wonder how much legs this'll have now that he's a major Rmoney backer?

Why does a soon-to-be 79 year old guy worth Twenty Five BILLION dollars care about who is President? WHY?

Ever seen Sheldon? He's got 4 . . . 6 years TOPS left on this rock, and that's being kind.

What stake does he have?

Taxes go back to Clinton levels - he's still a multi-billionaire.

Casinos get semi-regulated - he's still a multi-billionaire.

Casinos somehow get nationalized - he's still a multi-billionaire.

Even if, by some next-to-impossible scenario arose where he lost 24 billion of his wealth . . . he's still a billionaire.

Cui bono??

I know he really holds that much money. But is he partly just a bank? And if so, who are the depositors? Or maybe I should better say, what organizations are the depositors?

I don't have any answers, but I think there is little difference between a bank and a casino sometimes. People win and lose. The person who lost big last week could just win big this week. No one regulates casinos to see if the wins and losses are for real. How could they? After all it is theoretically just chance, just the odds. Or is it? You never hear of a casino going broke. Why not? If the games are not somewhat rigged (in terms of odds of winning), then why don't casinos go broke? Or do they and we don't hear about it?

And couldn't poker games for the very rich and influential be rigged quite easily if everyone was in on it? What's more couldn't the formality of a game just be foregone?

I think that casinos are an invitation to graft and corruption. I don't know why gambling was legalized unless it was to be strictly regulated. Maybe it is. Does anyone know?

Even if it is regulated in the US, I believe that some of Adelson's casinos are offshore. Why do we allow casino money in the US?

My wingnut father was waxing enthusiastic about him in one of the many email forwards he bombards me with. Your take makes me want to ask my father as well: You're reasonably healthy, you have it made financially, no one's coming to take what you've got. Why such an expenditure of visceral energy by framing every damned thing through the politics of hate, when you could and should be happy and thankful and wanting to make peace with a world you don't have much time left on? Does he think if he makes it to the pearly gates he'll have priority boarding. I say, he may be denied boarding for being such a nasty prick, despite playing the christian card.

Why would someone want to die pissed off when they have every means to live out their golden years in virtual nirvana?

Don't get me wrong, I still believe elements of the repuke party will game the votes, but the rich roaches are now allowed to come out into the light and tell us all how they are going to buy the election.

And what is simply amazing is that the rank and file repukes are just okay with this.

elicit money than to run casinos, international casinos?

Big, fat money-men go to those casinos. Who's to say whether they "lose" their money or "loose" their money once they are at the tables?

Who's to say what the country of origin is of Adelson's money?

If you wanted to change the nationality of money, let's say money from the Chinese government or from some wealthy Middle Eastern arms dealer, what better place to do it than in a casino?

I have no evidence. This is "just" a conspiracy theory.

I've read he hates unions and loves Israel. Supposedly he supported Gingrich because of Newt's support of Israel. The union Adelson is "PLAGUED" with is the one that represents low wage servers & such people at his casinos. Sounds like such a lovely guy - such profits and still begrudges those employees their representation for meager wages. What a winner!

So for $100 million do you think he can kill the unions and also get Romney to bomb Iran?

Found this article on his wife Dr. Miriam Adelson, and find in addition to casinos, they own a newspaper in Israel, called by some the equivalent of Fox News:

http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2012/02/08/miriam-adelson/
"Sheldon Adelson is Jewish, but he had only visited Israel a handful of times before their marriage. It seems clear that Dr. Adelson helped bring her husband to the Israeli cause, which has also resulted in the Adelson Family Foundation, which focuses primarily on programs that benefit the state of Israel and the Jewish people. The Adelsons also own Israel's largest newspaper, the stridently pro-Netanyahu Israel Hayom. According to The Atlantic, the paper is considered "the Fox News of Israel." Finally, the couple sponsors the Adelson Medical Foundation, which focuses on promoting a collaborative approach to medical research."

Then have the media do a zillion articles, to the extent they can get the information,
