US Takes Tougher Tone on Israeli Settlements in New Report

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

By MATTHEW LEE AND BRADLEY KLAPPER, ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON — May 6, 2016, 3:49 PM ET

The United States will endorse a tougher tone with Israel in an upcoming international report that takes the Jewish state to task over settlements, demolitions and property seizures on land the Palestinians claim for a future state, diplomats told The Associated Press.

The U.S. and its fellow Mideast mediators also will chastise Palestinian leaders for failing to rein in anti-Israeli violence. But the diplomats involved in drafting the document said its primary focus will be a surge of construction in Jewish housing in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

The U.S. approval of the harsh language marks a subtle shift. Washington has traditionally tempered statements by the so-called "Quartet" of mediators with careful diplomatic language, but the diplomats said the U.S. in this case will align itself closer to the positions of the European Union, Russia and the United Nations, who emphasize Israel's role in the Mideast impasse.

The report's release is sure to infuriate Israel, where officials are already bracing for expected criticism. And on the other side, although the mediators will endorse some long-standing Palestinian complaints, the Palestinians are likely to complain the report does not go far enough.

ZOA Applauds Donald Trump’s Backing for Expanding Israeli Settlements

The Zionist Organization of America praised Donald Trump for recent comments he made in support of expanding Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling the presidential candidate’s words “refreshing.”

Morton Klein, ZOA’s president said he was pleased to hear a “presidential candidate say that Israeli/Palestinian peace is not dependent upon Israel discriminating against Israeli Jews … by preventing them from building homes and communities in Judea/Samaria.”

In an interview with the Daily Mail, published on May 3, Trump said that settlement in the West Bank should “keep moving forward,” and did not isolate the settlements as an impediment to peace negotiations, which he said he supported.

Morton Klein, of the ZOA, praised Tump in a Thursday statement.

“We applaud what Mr. Trump said on this subject in his Daily Mail interview,“ Klein said.

JERUSALEM (AP) — A Jerusalem court on Tuesday handed a life sentence to the main attacker in the killing of a Palestinian teenager in 2014 whose death helped spark a chain of events that led to that year's Gaza war.

The court sentenced Yosef Haim Ben David, 30, to life plus 20 years. The state prosecutor said the damage he caused Israel and the family of the Palestinian teen is "irreparable."

Ben David and two accomplices abducted 16-year-old Mohammed Abu Khdeir in his east Jerusalem neighborhood, drove to a forest and burned him to death in 2014. They said it was in revenge for three Israeli teens abducted and killed by Palestinians allied with the Islamic militant group Hamas earlier that summer.

The killing of Abu Khdeir was widely condemned in Israel, but fueled clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police.

I didn't see any media coverage of this until just now, three days later.

The news was on BBC for a couple of days, but you won't see the AP story turning up on any major American 'news' programs.

Bibi and his ilk have been playing the part of Darth Cheney, and getting a free pass from the US, for way too long.

The building of Jewish settlements on the West banks, as well as evicting Palestinians from Jerusalem and elsewhere have been fueling the hatred and oppression of the Palestinian "caged" citizens for decades. This is not to say the Palestinians are innocent of retaliation, but it's been ineffective and only further justifies Bibi and his thugs' actions further.

WE should be aligned with the rest of the world. Can they ALL be wrong, and we alone with the Israeli governments are right? I think not.

Good. Let Bibi and his ilk scream and kick all they wish.
