Muslim girl called 'Isis' in high school yearbook
Source: CNN
But that's how the Muslim student discovered she was identified in the latest edition of the yearbook at her Rancho Cucamonga, California, high school.
Zehlif posted a photo of her yearbook photo to Twitter, saying only, "I guess I'm Isis in the yearbook ..."
"I am extremely saddened, disgusted, hurt and embarrassed that the Los Osos High School yearbook was able to get away with this," she wrote on Facebook. "The school reached out to me and had the audacity to say that this was a typo. I beg to differ, let's be real."
The Los Angeles Times quoted Chaffey Joint Union High School District Supt. Mat Holton as saying Zehlif was incorrectly identified as another student whose first name is Isis. The Times quoted Holton as saying that the district will take "appropriate actions" if officials find that anyone involved in the situation "acted irresponsibly and intentionally."

(14,176 posts)So....is there or is there not another student (who may look similar) named Isis? The story doesn't say. You'd think that would be easily verified. Not that that is a great excuse, especially considering the possible connotations of that name, but I could see that it could have been an actual mistake if that were the case.

(1,245 posts)If there really is another student named Isis Phillips, it's not really that hard to imagine this was an honest mistake on somebodies part. Not saying it WAS, but it could've been. Hopefully, the truth will out.

Isis is a common and beautiful name. Sadly, erased from most search engines. If you query just for 'Isis', you'll get on google and bing, nothing about the Egyptian goddess, except in the image searches where sexualization of that character has kept it around somewhat.

(7,107 posts)I know an Isis, and she is wonderful.

(33,982 posts)sure, her photo looks like it might be associated with that word in some tangential cultural way. If it had been swapped with 'Billy Anderson' someone might have caught it, but feminine name, female, cultural accoutrements of some part of the middle east, yeah. Probably got the nod because it fit all parameters and raised no flags. That's unfortunate and sad, but we're separated by the realities of what ISIS is, by thousands of miles, days of reporting lag and distortion, etc.
If it was malicious, I don't think the name would have been someone from the school. Certainly the last name would have been something more insulting than 'Phillips'. They also might have capitalized ISIS. In for a penny, in for a pound.

(35,348 posts)Just like "Phillips" is associated with headscarves in a tangential cultural way.
Anybody pissed off that a Muslim girl was called "Isis" must also account for why they somehow thought her last name was "Phillips". Is that some sort of slur? Is there some horrible crime associated with the dregs of Muslim society by the name of "Phillips"?
How's this?
"My name is Zehlevi, but I guess I'm Phillips in the yearbook." It's 100% as accurate a statement, but somehow doesn't show sensitivity and a desire to be outraged.
BTW, this report made it around the world as an example of Muslim-hatred. How, exactly, calling her "Phillips" wasn't at issue. The assumption is that if she's called "Isis" she might just as easily been called "Isil."
That Isis is a perfectly fine name, even coupled with "Phillips" is shown in a simple web search. There's an "Isis Phillips" (not the same girl, by any means) that is the financial manager for that reactionary hate show (I have to assume) called "Democracy Now." http://www.democracynow.org/about/staff
We so want to think the worst about people.

(33,982 posts)They misspelled my name in my high school yearbook. My initial reaction was 'I'M NOT SPANISH YOU KNOW THAT' but it wasn't that they were being jerks (And being confused for a Spaniard isn't even a bad thing), they just didn't know, didn't care, didn't have time, take your pick.
So, my name is forever wrong in my yearbook. There are worse things in this world.

So she was "saddened, disgusted, hurt and embarrassed ".
THATS a lot of adjectives.
Obviously she will be harmed for life and will require MILLIONS of dollars for therapy.

(10,857 posts)There are still plenty of us who remember that there is another Isis who is totally awesome!
I think the young woman in the yearbook even looks a little bit like Joanna Cameron.
