New York officer linked to corruption probe dies in apparent suicide

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A high-ranking New York City police officer who was reportedly questioned as part of a wide-ranging corruption probe took his own life on Friday, police said.

Inspector Michael Ameri was found dead inside his vehicle with an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound" in Babylon, a town on Long Island in New York, according to a statement from the city's police department.

Several local news outlets reported that Ameri had been interviewed as part of an ongoing investigation into whether senior police officers accepted gifts and travel from businessmen in exchange for official favors.

Investigators from several agencies are pursuing a number of interconnected strands, including aspects of Mayor Bill de Blasio's fundraising activities.

... has not yet been completed. It's similar to the use of the word "alleged" ... even in cases where security video clearly shows the identity of the person committing the crime, because the suspect hasn't been legally convicted of the crime (and hasn't confessed to the crime) it's a hyper-accurate way to describe events.

I'm guessing it's a way for the news organization to cover their asses against claims of bias, interference, or libel. But I agree, it often seems silly and it's a distraction at times.

It's certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that he was offed in a way that would look like suicide, particularly if someone thought he was going to spill the beans about something.

Unfortunately, the department that will investigate his death is the same department that "fails to notice" (i.e. covers up) corruption and abuse year in and year out.

So it will probably remain an open question.

If it isn't ruled a suicide, then his insurance and pension are not in jeopardy for his surviving spouse.
