U. Tennessee forced by lawmakers to shut down campus diversity office
Jennifer Kabbany - Fix Editor May 21, 2016
A law approved this week says state funds may not be used by the University of Tennessee to fund its Office of Diversity and Inclusion in the coming fiscal year.
With that, the university has shut the office down and eliminated its four staff positions a $445,000 cut.
The law, which reallocates the money to fund scholarships for minority students in engineering programs, is only in effect for one year, reports the Knoxville News Sentinel.
The law comes after the diversity office made national headlines last fall with its request to students to use gender-neutral pronouns such as ze, xe, xem, xyr, zirs and hirs. Then last December the office again made national news with its holiday best practices list that said holiday parties should not have Secret Santa-themed gift exchanges and told the campus ensure your holiday party is not a Christmas party in disguise.

Do people actually use these weird words to describe or refer to another person? I've only seen this special snowflake crap on the internet. :I
That kind of mangling of the English language is nuts!!
And even this old atheist sees nothing wrong with having a traditional holiday party. No one says you have to ascribe to their belief system. If anyone wants to have a Hanukkah or whatever party, then so what?
It's sad that "diversity" must be associated with this sort of nuttiness.

(8,303 posts)This sort of stuff is not selling well with the general public:

The NYCHRL requires employers and covered entities to use an individuals preferred name, pronoun and title (e.g., Ms./Mrs.) regardless of the individuals sex assigned at birth, anatomy, gender, medical history, appearance, or the sex indicated on the individuals identification.
Most individuals and many transgender people use female or male pronouns and titles. Some transgender and gender non-conforming people prefer to use pronouns other than he/him/his or she/her/hers, such as they/them/theirs or ze/hir. 10 Many transgender and gender non-conforming people choose to use a different name than the one they were given at birth.
All people, including employees, tenants, customers, and participants in programs, have the right to use their preferred name regardless of whether they have identification in that name or have obtained a court-ordered name change, except in very limited circumstances where certain federal, state, or local laws require otherwise (e.g., for purposes of employment eligibility verification with the federal government). Asking someone their preferred gender pronoun and preferred name is not a violation of the NYCHRL.

Rapedby Clinton or Rapedby Deblasio that's how they would have to refer to me?
Or if I worked for Trump Towers and told them my preferred name was Fuck Trump? They would be forced to refer to me by that name?
Or a NYPD cop whose preferred name is Ikill Blacks. Anyone who refuses to use that name would be fined?
If my preferred pronoun was Dr. even though I didn't have a degree, would people be fined for not referring to me to as Dr.?
Boy, New Yorkers are going to have a lot of fun with this.
I think if I move to NYC my preferred name will be Yourmajesty Iloveyou. Just for fun. And the fines that people will pay for refusing to address me as that will go a long way towards funding Deblasio's government.

(8,303 posts)identify as female, the business or landlord or whoever has to refer to you as "Glenda" rather than "Glenn" (if that's the name you chose).
But I don't think I'd be able to force my landlord to address me as Ms. HitlerILoveYa on the grounds of non-discrimination.
The weird pronouns are hopeless to me.

(34,582 posts)my problem is that they have so many. Even German isn't that complicated. Having masculine, feminine, neutral1, neutral2, neutral3, etc, is ridiculous.

(53,521 posts)Grammatical gender in English has been decaying for over a 1000 years. In a few hundred years I expect "they" to replace he/she for natural, organic linguistic reasons, anyway.

Administrative bloat is a major issue at many public and private schools.
Of course, I'd like to know how many Associate Deans and Vice Provosts they have at the university as well.

(7,412 posts)Paying a half million bucks a year for a few people to issue ridiculous "guidelines" sounds like a waste when instead it could be sending 10 or however many minority students through a valuable course of study.

(3,212 posts)I've been for gay rights for years, and support transgender folks, as well, and aside from some religious whackos, I think acceptance is moving in the right direction. It's been a long time coming, but we are finally living in an era where we can see progress.
However, I think the sticking point is going to be when people are asked to go along with gender fluidity and stupid, made-up pronouns. I do get that some people don't strongly identify with only one gender, but there's going to be push back if your kid's kindergarten teacher wants to be a woman one day and a man the next. And do you really want an attorney representing you who will be a man one day and a woman the next?
Frankly, I have a hard time believing that the government is going to mandate a right for people to change genders in the workplace. I think people are going to have to choose a gender for the workplace and stick with it, and express their other gender in their off time.

(6,241 posts)This is getting rid of nearly half a million dollars worth of bureaucracy and using the money to actually educate kids in engineering.
Just because the story is taking place in Tennessee doesn't mean it's automatically racist. Especially when it's going to be minority students that will benefit from it.
