Donald Trump rep: offer to debate Bernie Sanders was just a joke
Source: Guardian
Donald Trump was only joking when he said he would debate Bernie Sanders, his campaign said on Thursday after a morning of media frenzy.
<...>
Sanders campaign confirmed he was serious about the opportunity if Trump was, but an aide to Trump clarified on Thursday that the former reality TV star was joking and had no intention to actually debate Sanders.
A debate between candidates from both parties before the conclusion of the nominating process would have been highly unusual and a potential headache for Clinton, who turned down an invitation from Fox News to debate Sanders earlier this week citing the need to shift gears toward the looming battle with Trump in November.

(31,700 posts)The senator wants to do it, Briggs told The Hill. Well see if Trump meant what he said.
A Trump campaign official reached by The Hill, however, characterized the remarks as tongue and cheek.
Still, the Trump official indicated it's something that may be under consideration now that remarks have generated so much interest and taken on a life of their own.

(7,473 posts)Trump already announced he was out to pick up Bernie voters and he already has 20% of them. The two could talk about protectionism and gang up on Hillary.
If Bernie cared about helping Trump, he wouldn't have accepted the invitation at all. Even going at all helps Trump and hurts Hillary.
JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)Worse yet. She hurts California voters.
Hillary can still agree to debate Bernie before June 7. It's her choice.
creeksneakers2
(7,473 posts)What's in it for her? She debated Bernie nine times. Bernie said the same things in all of them.
Are you saying its OK to help Trump to get even with Hillary?
Lordquinton
(7,886 posts)The fact that she said "Anytime, anywhere" about debates and has since been avoiding them like the plague?
Refusing to debate in the liberal bastion of the country is a poor move.
Bernie said the same thing in all of them, and Clinton didn't... That should send some big flags if you meant that seriously, and not as just some half-assed dig about sanders staying on point with his message.
creeksneakers2
(7,473 posts)There is less need for another debate if that's what he's going to do though.

(57,936 posts)for Bernie.
She only worries about Hillary. She is egotistical and self-centered and narcissistic to the point of nausea.
In that respect she is more Republican than Democratic.
"What's in it for her?"
What was in it for Thomas Jefferson and the signers of the Declaration of Independence?
And this is what they offered:
our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/declaration_transcript.html
What is Hillary offering?
Excuses. And poor excuses at that.
In the clips, Hillary looks like she knows she is lying.
The money that has been spent on these investigations. And if it was just a mistake, why didn't she just admit it in the first place? We wouldn't have needed so much investigating.
Everybody makes mistakes. But this looks very much like it was more a strategic ploy a run-around than a mistake, and then the question arises as to why she thought she needed the run-around. And that is what is going to cause her trouble.
If you think we Berniebros are making a lot out of it, wait till you see the Republicans run with it. I can hear the ads now.
creeksneakers2
(7,473 posts)She has tons of benevolence. That's why she's in public life. Right now she's running a campaign and competing. She has to weigh what helps that goal. That's what I mean by what's in it for her.
What is Bernie's reason to debate Trump if its not about him?

Bernie Sanders is ramping up his efforts in the presidential race despite long odds, while sharpening his criticisms of a Democratic Party increasingly focused on the general election with Hillary Clinton as their presumptive nominee.
Here are the arguments for and against Sanders staying in the race.
FOR:
1. Probably our last chance to hear a public official say single-payer health care for a generation or two.
2. Nation can pretend it might actually do something about corporate influence on politics, becoming embroiled in imprudent wars, and income inequality for few more weeks.
AGAINST:
1. Staying in forces Clinton to waste time and energy learning to campaign against someone with clear principles and political stances.
2. Would allow Clinton to focus on fucking up general election campaign.
3. Best to just squash Americans belief they can actually make a difference in the political system now before it gets too far out of hand.
