Arc de Trump? GOP hopeful wishes for D.C. statue
Source: CNN
Billings, Montana (CNN)Donald Trump may have just clinched the delegates necessary for the GOP nomination, but he already has his sights on a larger prize -- immortality in the nation's capital.
Trump -- who made his wealth in part from the branding of his name -- said he wouldn't mind seeing his surname on a statue in Washington, D.C., one day.
Speaking at a rally here Thursday night, the presumptive Republican nominee repeated a joke that he's made before about potentially naming the border wall he wants to build after his namesake.
But then he thought of a better idea.
"It's going to be a beautiful wall. Someday, when I'm gonzo, maybe they'll name it after Trump," he said. "I'd really much rather have a statue in Washington, D.C. I don't want a wall named after me, but that's OK. I want a statue in Washington, D.C."
As the crowd cheered, Trump suggested maybe he'd "share it with Jefferson or something."

(7,768 posts)You'd think I'd be getting used to him and his mouth by now, but no.
A statue of himself that he might share with Jefferson? You really can't make this shit up...

(45,984 posts)We only build monuments to dead men. Even after he's dead we might be on safe ground to question Trump's manhood, so he'll never get a monument.
The last tyrant to try to build a monument to himself was Caligula. He declared himself tried to put a statue of himself in the Temple in Jerusalem. It didn't work out too well for him.

(6,241 posts)seriously as a presidential candidate? This kind of crap makes me think Trump is still just pulling our legs. It's like "Stop it, GOP. Show us your real candidate. You know... the guy whom we vigorously disagree with, but can be respected as a statesman."

(13,870 posts)He's not even elected and he's talking about a statue of himself. I think we just passed over the Rubicon and into the era of the American Caesar.

(45,460 posts)he has to lose, right? I'm sure his poll numbers are inflated and voters will come to their senses by election day. Americans can't be that self-loathing.

(5,106 posts)Can anyone remember another presidential candidate, let alone an actual POTUS, who was dreaming on about future monuments to him? (at least, out loud)? This man could NOT ever have been really serious. Now he's stuck and probably COULD murder someone and be forgiven by his followers. Dubya Bush was embarrassing enough, but Trump is truly scary in what his popularity is saying about much of the U.S.A. today. As a retired teacher who used to get upset at the attitude toward learning and overall knowledge by many students over the past forty-some years (compared to the attitudes in many emerging countries), I STILL had way more faith in future generations than seems was warranted.
