Weekly Address: Remembering Our Fallen Heroes
Source: White House
In this weeks address, President Obama solemnly reflected on the meaning of Memorial Day and recognized the sacrifices made by the American warriors who never made it back home. Though the President stressed that citizens should thank active-duty troops and veterans every day of the year, he emphasized that Memorial Day is reserved for remembering the unselfish men and women who gave their lives in defense of the nation. In addition to reflecting on the unpayable debt owed to fallen service members, Americans should also make an effort to offer support to the families of their countrymen who gave everything. Whether its hiring a veteran, reaching out to a grieving family member, or simply pausing for a moment of silent thanks, the President wants the country to join him in an act of remembrance during the Memorial weekend.

(478 posts)If the soldiers killed in the middle east are truly the hero's he is claiming, then why don't their deaths get public recognition. No, it allows people to not see the true cost. In Vietnam, the practice produced anti-war sentiment. Having been in combat myself, I reserve the word hero for very special people, and not just everyone that serves or dies. Guess that's just me...

(849 posts)If he only could have used his Japan trip to stop in his home state of Hawaii and given this speech at the USS Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor, it would have been a wonderful gesture of his sentiment to survivors of American war dead and living veterans.

(129,155 posts)and it was poignant given his recent trip to Hiroshima. Was also glad that he mentioned the history of this holiday as I know I grew up with my parents calling it what it originally was called - "Decoration Day".
Thank you to all the fallen vets and thanks for posting!
