Minneapolis SWAT officer charged with assault
June 18, 2012|Amy Forliti, Associated Press

A Minneapolis police sergeant and SWAT officer — who was apparently angered by a loud cellphone conversation — was charged with assault Monday for allegedly punching a man in the head, seriously injuring him.

~snip~
Sommer said video surveillance from Saturday night shows that Clifford and Vanderlee were seated at adjacent patio tables at Tanners Station, a steakhouse and restaurant in Andover, a Minneapolis suburb.

Sommer said Vanderlee was apparently talking loudly on his cellphone to a friend when Clifford got up and approached him. Sommer said the video shows Clifford appeared to say something to Vanderlee, who was still on his phone.

As Vanderlee was about to get to his feet, Sommer said, “Clifford strikes him with a closed fist, just once in the head.’’

Brian Vander Lee, 43, of Ramsey, who works in the Star Tribune advertising department, was in stable condition at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids on Monday afternoon and was breathing on his own, said Steven Engelhart, Vander Lee's boss. A family spokesman said Vander Lee was moving his hands and feet and was no longer on life support.

The suspect ran from the scene, but turned himself in to Anoka County Jail yesterday afternoon with a lawyer by his side. ... He's a sergeant with the Minneapolis Police Department and is currently the executive officer of the MPD's SWAT team.

Assaults someone, then runs away?

... and what about his wife that helped him flee the scene of a crime? WHY was "she" not arrested as well?????

If this had been a drug dealer, who assaulted a police officer, and his girlfriend who was an exotic dancer help him flee the scene of a crime....

You know damn well the girlfriend would have been arrested, and charged with multiple things......

... and in the story, they have already trotted out the "kids angle" to help this fellow with his "image problem".....

The life of the guy (and the family) he sucker punched is going to be turned upside down..... unless this fellow has some wickedly good short term/long term insurance.. they stand to loose their home, and the life that they had worked for....

All because some cop with an ego the size of the SUV he drives, decides "he" is going to dictate how others are conduct themselves in life.....

The DA owes it to the victims family to charge her as an accessory. This will make it more difficult to hide assets.

"He was hired by the Minneapolis police in 1993. Two years later, suspecting he had confronted a prowler while on patrol, he allegedly pepper-sprayed the man and hit him several times in the head with a flashlight. Charges of fifth-degree assault against Clifford were dropped for lack of evidence.

The city of Minneapolis reached a settlement in a civil suit over the incident, paying alleged victim Harry Lazover $55,000.":

“You wouldn’t think a police officer would behave in this way,’’ said Anoka County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Paul Sommer. “It’s kind of a shock to our system.’’

My son was kicked in the head and face and held down while officers beat the hell out of him, he was also attacked by their dogs, 2 of them, his head was slammed into a cement chimney, after being brought to a police station, and I his mom having to call there repeatedly about when was my son going to get medical care, which after several hours he was brought to a hosp, and given minimal care!!!! He said he feels like hes bleeding in his brain, hes in alot of pain, hes had hid spirit shattered, he did some thing wrong but............. officers should be charged with assault and go to jail just like any one one else would!!!!! The way my son was beaten is a crime!!!!!!! He hurts so bad and its been a few months!!!!!!!! I know exactly how he feels because I was beat up by 6 cops 20 years ago, I was running from people that were predjidous against white people and were threatening to kill me and my children, I was constantly having to call the police for help, I think they got sick of coming to our address, I was going thru baby blues, which I did not under stand, I asked for protection from the police, the county, family, friends, and even a counselor, no one knew what to do for me and my family. My neighbors broke in and stole 5,000.00 dollars out of my apt one of the times me and my children fled from our home, I would drive around with them til our drunken partyingneighbors would be passed out and it would be safe to go home for awhile, anyways after driving for 3 nights in a row I had a breakdown from the baby blues, and no sleep for 2 months, and Im still ashamed to this day, but I ended up a high speed chase with 6 police departments, there was an officer who I had been raped by when I was first divorced, and I never dealt with it and the cop in the rear view mirror reminded me of that cop that hurt me. My adrenaline soared and the rest is history, I was beat up by 6 cops, there were 5 police depts involved. Im 4 foot 11. And while I was face down on the ground hog tied they were kicking me and punching me in my ribs and sides, and calling me a bitch, and then picked up my head and slammed my face into the curb rubbing it back and forth. To this day certain officers have beat on my family members, throw my mistake up in our faces, and think they can abuse my family. Im sick of it!!!!!!!!!!!! I would like to see a law passed that wont allow for any officer to beat up someone their arresting!!!! They are more or less showing that they think they are better than the Judges and the courts, they have no right to do what they personally feel like doing because they are upset, once they start beating some one they are automatically a criminal them selves!!!!! They also get put on paid administrative leave, with benefits, if I did what has been done to me and countless other people, Id be sitting in a jail cell, for years!!!!! We as tax payers are also paying the huge settlements the victims like myself get, there are Officers who Im sure are sick of having to cover up for the abusers, and Ill bet a millon dollars that the Officers that arent abusive are sick and tired of being clumped together with the rogur breed that are punch happy. I would love to see a new breed of Cops, that can do their jobs without feeling they have the right to beat the hell out of people!!!!!!I would love to ask each cop that has hurt me and mine, why????????????? Why did you have to do what you did????????????
