Pleading for Peace in Chicago: ‘We Could Be Looking at a Blood Bath’

Source: New York Times

CHICAGO — During Memorial Day weekend, this city reopens its Lake Michigan beaches, regular fireworks displays start at Navy Pier and the downtown streets and spruced-up Riverwalk are crowded with tourists.

But the holiday weekend is often seen here as the start of heightened violence, as well. That has been particularly worrying this year to community leaders and city officials, as they grapple with a rise in gun violence that has traumatized some neighborhoods and left city officials searching for new ways to subdue street crime.

“If something doesn’t change, if we don’t get jobs for these kids, if we don’t change the economic situation, I’m worried that we could be looking at a blood bath,” said the Rev. Corey Brooks, a pastor on the city’s South Side, a mostly African-American area where some of the shootings have been concentrated. “If something doesn’t happen, I fear that we’re potentially looking at one of the worst summers we’ve ever had.”

As of Friday morning, homicides in Chicago were up 52 percent in 2016, compared with the same period a year ago, and shootings had increased by 50 percent, though the pace of violence has slowed in recent weeks, the police said. Only five months into the year, at least 233 people have been killed.

no education = no jobs = violence

I agree with you. Looks to be a bad summer.

They closed some schools that were half empty and moved the kids to other schools that were half empty.

Suddenly you have kid going to schools that are being well utilized, saving money on electricity, custodial staff, maintenance, etc.

Somehow that just doesn't equal "no education." However much you don't like the mayor, it's an absurd argument.

A majority of these gun crimes in Chicago are gang related and most of these gangbangers come from broken homes and families.

When you grow up in a bleak environment with crappy schools and no jobs, the allure of dope slinging and stealing is strong, that I know. But it doesn't help when these kids living in this environment have no stable homes to live in, no father figures to guide them, and no positive role models to look up to. I said this before, but one of the main reasons why kids join gangs isn't just money, it's to be apart of a "family". Economics and illegal gun ownership are parts of the issue, but they're not the only parts either.

Is Rahm trying to do anything to stop the violence? Would love to hear from any Chicagoans who are DU members.

He appointed Andrea Zopp, the candidate for senator who lost to the DNC brain trust candidate of Tammy Duckworth, to deal with city affairs. That is Rahm-speak for, "I sent 'you people' someone of color, so be thankful and kneel to me again."

who commit or are responsible for over 70% of the property or personal crime in the city. Obviously that doesn't cover the financial shenanigans of the business and financial players here.

I've not read that there's any concerted effort to arrest or detain them for questioning, etc.

Rahm follows at least a couple of past mayors whose police chiefs never enforced any due force or excessive force rules, for which there's no universally agreed upon definition. Mayors as lawyers tend to be passive about on the ground police judgment.

As everyone probably is aware, this city has paid out as much to compensate police victims as it says it has to take from its large school system.

The fusion center has over 800 pan and zoom cameras throughout the city, but no one ever sees them or hears of their use.

Journalism keeps up the old 'bulldog news scooper' image, but really, The Trib and Sun-Times have the same owner/controllers, thus passively bureaucratic about most local public issues, except when 'bleed leads' can keep up a race/class wedge in the city.

While Rahm plays some bureaucrat optics with the public, my take is that this city is as violent as Rahm lets it be.

Though BLM got voters out to get a new states attorney in place, Chicago voters haven't trusted any new minority mayoral candidates -- and newspaper/TV media keep it that way -- and so keeps getting screwed by privatized city services and carpetbaggers.

89 individuals causing 70% of the crime problem. Is that street crime only? Wow, since they can count them, then they know who these individuals are, right? Duh... why don't they nab them?

As for future Mayoral candidates, what about Chewey Garcia? When is Rahm up for election again. This Nov?

accounting for it.

Maybe it's more than 89 by now, maybe hundreds.

As for Chewy, he ran once and backers won't back him again. I'd prefer Miguel Del Valle or Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board President.

... really. I don't know who you are for in this Primary, or whether you have voted yet, but I know if we could get Bernie Sanders in office with a Dem House and Senate, he will go to work to make that idea come true. Wonders never cease. He will do what he can to get the young people jobs and education. Kids don't have hope anymore with the never ending status quo that can think only of itself. It will take time and allot of hard work, but we have plenty of that. I'm California dreamin right now!
