Job Openings in U.S. Decrease by Most in Almost Four Years

Job openings in the U.S. decreased in April by the most in almost four years, the latest sign that the labor market is cooling.
The number of open positions dropped by 325,000, the biggest decline since September 2008, to 3.42 million from 3.74 million the prior month, the Labor Department said today in Washington. Hiring slowed from the prior month and firings climbed.
The decrease in openings coincides with the slowdown in hiring seen in April and May, signaling employers are pulling back as the economy cools. The number of jobs available is down from an average 4.46 million in the two years before the recession began, showing the labor market continues to struggle.
The most worrisome development is this big drop in hiring, said Harm Bandholz, chief U.S. economist at UniCredit Group in New York. If you have the outlook that things are getting little bit better, you eventually have to hire more people. But the fact that this is not happening -- thats worrisome.

I've heard estimates of a 4% drop in GDP if all that goes through, including a recession.
Obama has promised to veto a straight extension of the Bush tax cuts too so he sealed his own fate regarding help for the election.

(15,882 posts)Don't hold your breath. We haven't thought it important to reinforce what is really important about progressive liberal ideas for at least the past 50 or 60 years, on the scale it was needed, and you are seeing that neglect play itself out today. The tools today, social networks and web sites and tv commercials will never be as powerful as standing should-to-shoulder in cooperation, fellowship, food, and song. They cater to and reinforce the very lack of understanding that we hope to combat. November will be instructive for that reason alone.
Marx lived in a time of earnest conversation. I think if Marx woke up in America today he would just go back to sleep.

(1,214 posts)Who have been looking for jobs for several years (three in my case) aren't at all surprised by this news. The job market is just disgusting.
I am currently waiting for a callback from a minimum-wage position as a food prep helper in a small restaurant, and I just returned from a two-hour excursion by bus to sell some more books, among them the dictionary and thesaurus I've had since college (surprisingly, the bookstore bought them). Haven't got much left to sell, honestly. I hope I find a job soon... before Sallie Mae repossesses my education.
