Qatar convicts Dutch woman held 'after being raped'
Source: BBC
A court in Qatar has convicted a Dutch woman of having sex outside marriage after she told police she was raped.
The 22-year-old was handed a suspended sentence and fined $824 (£580). She will also be deported.
Her lawyer said her drink had been spiked at a Doha hotel in March and she had woken up in a stranger's flat, where she realised she had been raped.
Her alleged attacker, who said the sex was consensual, was sentenced to 100 lashes for having sex outside marriage.
He will be given a further 40 lashes for consuming alcohol.

(1,701 posts)I suppose the woman was lucky not to have been sentenced to whipping. At least her attacker is being punished, but not for the right reasons and not in the way that he should be. This country should be a no-go place for everyone.

I know it's a different culture -- and we still the death penalty (albeit not by beheading) -- but for chrissake, punishing a rape victim?

(9,897 posts)First off, being raped is NOT having sex outside of marriage...its being goddamn raped.
The mere implication that it is in any way a consensual act is victim shaming at least and enabling to the rapist at worst.
140 "lashes"? I realize that this too is a brutal and anachronistic concept, but this is also a severely victimizer friendly sentence. The lashes are not exactly slaps on the wrist in a literal sense, but metaphorically they certainly are....IF they were being administered for the crime of rape...not just sex outside of marriage. The actual crime committed here is the only thing NOT being given a sentence!
I have had an absolute ass full of religion this year...from bathroom bigotry to gay hate crime massacres to rapists in the US getting 6 months in county jail instead of 13 years in state prison to this woman being charged with the crime of getting drugged and raped while unconscious. Fuck them all. There is no god, no prophet, no heaven, no hell...there is here and there is now. Yesterday is memory, tomorrow is not promised, only today is available to live in and make an impact. Wasting today on sky daddies and fantasy opens the door for bigotry, hate, misogyny and gives tacit approval and cover for all of these atrocities against the human spirit. When people focus everything on the rules to "guarantee eternal life" in some other plane of existence - with virgins or clouds or rivers of milk and honey or pure spiritual bliss forever - then they stop being good citizens of the Earth and participants in a just society.
Live free or die? I would rather just live free....free from religion and its nasty after taste and consequences. After that good start, I think we could devise a better society with the basic framework of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a starting point...it is a damn sight more just than the Bible, the Torah, the Koran or any other fairy tale collection.

(2,495 posts)and we are focusing on what words we should use to describe the killer and getting people into an uproar who want to continue sanitizing the issue and calling it 'mental health'.
I shudder to think what would have happened to the rape victim (it's her fault for being a woman) had she been a citizen of the country.

(6,241 posts)western country worth anything would let them keep her.
They would land about 20 people at the prison and take her out of there. Anyone that resists would be shot in the face.
And if they didn't, the entire sane population of their country would be screaming for blood. I'm tired of this garbage and their entire garbage anti-women, anti-LGBTQ culture. No westerner should go there. No western government should give them aid. Let the terrorists there burn those governments down.

So this is hardly unexpected. It is not like they couldn't get blankets and wrap them in that. apparently a woman is never considered helpless in that country. And family morals is everything.
Think of that when the moral police (family values people) run amok in this country.
