Nebraska, Iowa Senate Republicans say Dems’ gun proposals are unlikely to halt future attacks

WASHINGTON The Senate will plunge into a major gun debate Monday as lawmakers grapple with what, if any, action to take in the wake of the worst mass shooting in modern American history.
Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and many of his fellow Democrats staged a 15-hour filibuster last week in a demand for the votes on proposals aimed at preventing suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms.
While the renewed push for gun legislation stemmed from the recent Orlando massacre of 49 people, Murphy also evoked the 2012 Newtown school shooting in his home state.
For those of us that represent Connecticut, the failure of this body to do anything, anything at all in the face of that continued slaughter isnt just painful to us, its unconscionable, Murphy said.

From the article: the importance of preserving Americans rights to due process and to bear arms.
I'd say more but I'd get a hide for being over the line toward Republicans on gun rights for every nut.

(1,957 posts)I know that's blasphemous to say but they just might be right.
The problem is the culture. The guns are just one scab on that infection.
It is an attempt to find a simple solution to a very complex topic. Very complex.
That man could have accomplished nearly the same result using weapons that are completely legal -- now and even after this ban.

(1 post)...ABOUT doing nothing. Ever notice how ALLLLLLLL the Republicans say the same things? Stock answers. This bullshit about being able to buy guns when you're on the "no fly list." All the Repukers say: it's a flawed list and we musn't infringe on peoples rights to guns (blah blah) First of all, over 99% of the people on the list are NOT AMERICANS! So why are the GOPers-who are legendary for their xenophobia and racism so opposed to restricting people on the no fly list? My only conclusion is a combination of the following: for the GOP politicians: they get millions from the gun lobby for sitting on their hands re: gun control (really public safety). For civilians (hmmm mostly all GOP followers) they buy into the slippery slope nonsense that ANY regulation is the beginning of the end for their freedom loving asses-especially when that Obama is gonna come after their precious guns any day now. These dumbasses need to google Waco Siege and tell us how that all worked out.

(1,957 posts)They say this action won't solve the problem. And they might be right.
So much for pretending to be the party with solutions.
Come up with legislation that gets laughed out of court and it'll set any real solutions back further than it is now.
OTOH, it is really good stream of consciousness. You wouldn't be Sonny Corleone, would you?

(3,256 posts)None of these bought off pols have a clue about the constitution or anything else. They just know how to get in the campaign dough from their bosses. Talking to any gun nut is a waste of breath. They only know what they've been told. Once in a while I recommend
a good book on the Constitution, but know no one will read it and long as they can get spoon fed by the media.
