APNewsBreak: State Department Reopens Clinton Emails Probe
Source: ABC News
The State Department is reopening an internal investigation of possible mishandling of classified information by Hillary Clinton and top aides, officials told The Associated Press on Thursday.
Although the former secretary of state's closest confidants have left the agency, they could still face punishment. The most serious is the loss of security clearances, which could complicate her aides' hopes of securing top positions on her national security team if she becomes president.
The State Department started its review in January after declaring 22 emails from Clinton's private server to be "top secret." It was suspended in April so as not to interfere with the FBI's inquiry. State Department spokesman John Kirby said the probe is restarting after the Justice Department's announcement Wednesday that it won't bring any criminal charges.

(24,396 posts)the potential of being more dangerous than the many probes Hillary has already endured.
This really isn't about Hillary. It's about the power struggles that go on between State, the FBI and other fed agencies, all of which have their own fiefdoms, procedures and policies to defend. State has not looked good throughout emailgate, and they could simply be looking to save face and have THEIR say in the public arena concerning these matters.
Hell, the whole purpose could be to point out that the R Congress has denied funding to State many times over, and that none of these faux-issues would be issus at all had Congress funded State at the level it needed to be funded to have the security they need in these times.

(24,396 posts)The State Department has the most out of date and ancient infrastructure in the government due to the lack of funding to secure their internal networks.
When I conducted my last survey of the State Department over two years ago, those who were outside the State Department internal network (i.e.anybody who traveled at all) could not access their email. Period full stop.
Hillary Clinton's email server network was more secure than anything the State Department had ever presented in the entire history of that Bureau's history. She is to be commended for the effort and personal expenditure she went to in order to provide herself with the very basic service she needed in order to do her job during her time as Secretary of State.
Yes, that is correct, PERSONAL EXPENDITURE.
She provided herself with better infrastructure than the State Department was capabale of providing during her tenure and she paid for nearly all of it out of pocket.
Needless to say, this is the absolute most information I can provide in a private context without violating the law.

Are cabinet level budgets funded by Congress broken down that specific by line item? like IT upgrades for example.
Or is the department as a whole budgeted a certain amount of $$ which is spent to their discretion based on their priorities?
If the system in place in 2009 was less secure than having a private server, has it been upgraded since then, or will the next SOS also need to have a private server outside the system?

In these times, there are basics we need, and Internet security is one of them. I read in different places that even though Hillary's server was off-site, her email was still more secure than what the State Dept. had. I read that Powell, Rice and Kerry also resorted to alternate ways to send and receive email. Government is more than buying guns and making war. If conservatives do not like government, I wish to hell they'd stay out of it.
James Comey said today that a gmail account would be more secure than Hillary's private server.

(4,032 posts)That's the lesser goal of the Republicans now that she won't be charged.
Comey called her "extremely careless" and "negligent."
Others found to have been extremely careless and negligent have lost their security clearance.
What will a State Department investigation find? If it agrees with Comey, who will take the fall?
I think it's unlikely it will be Hillary, but don't expect Republicans to let this go. It's all they have.

(14,764 posts)That the entire agency works this way. They are forced to.
They can't single any one person out without exposing every one, including those in the inspectors office.

(4,033 posts)For months, republican Benghazi committee chairman Trey Gowdy has been playing up the fact that Hillary Clinton used her own private email server for conducting official government business. Thats set off a firestorm which has forced four separate government agencies to step in and defend her against a wide range of false accusations. Now it turns out Gowdy himself has been running his own congressional email through a private server of his own.
...
It turns out Trey Gowdy has been running his info@treygowdy.com email address through a private email server, despite giving that address out as an official point of contact and almost certainly receiving official government correspondence through that address. Additionally his republican colleague Jason Chaffetz has been caught giving out a Gmail address for official correspondence, which is also run through a private email server. One wonders if well see an eighteen month investigation into their email as well.

Keep in mind that they over classify everything. A guest list of the local PTA luncheon could be classified. Broad brush classifying.
Let's give Hillary some credit in knowing she is on an open line and wouldn't be talking about real important stuff!
