Michigan residents on Medicare saved $17.6 million on prescription drugs through the Affordable Care Act, according a report released today by the Centers for Medicare and & Medicaid Services.
The report is the latest in a series of recent announcements touting financial benefits of the controversial law in the lead-up to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, which is expected Thursday.
The savings in prescription drug costs comes from a provision of the health care reform law that is gradually closing the so-called donut hole the gap in coverage for the Medicare prescription drug benefit.
According to the report, seniors and those with disabilities saved $485 million nationwide through discounts provided for drugs that fall in the coverage gap. In Michigan, more than 23,000 people were affected, saving an average of $757 each.
