Leveson inquiry: Jon Snow attacks 'pernicious' Daily Mail publisher

Source: The Guardian

Jon Snow, the Channel 4 news anchor, has launched a scathing attack on Daily Mail publisher, Associated Newspapers, claiming it has a "pernicious" and sometimes "mendacious" agenda to undermine people in public life.

Snow told the Leveson inquiry on Monday afternoon that the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday was worse than News International's titles and had an agenda that undermined politicians and others.

"There is something more insidious about Associated Newspapers and very possibly they will go after me for saying so," he said. "I believe they have an agenda for trying to undermine or wreck the careers of individual people in public life and I think that is unhealthy."

Snow added that the private lives of people in public life are largely irrelevant to readers and they should be allowed to "stand or fall by what they achieve or fail to achieve".

in terms of what they want. Average sales of the Mail since 2000 to date are nine times higher than those of The Guardian. I gues it follows that the Mail will be around for longer. In December they overtook the NYT for online readership so I guess they must have a lot of non UK readers too.

He was viciously attacked by the Mail for questioning official government propaganda during Thatcher's Falklands War.

The Mail on Sunday apologised over the weekend for two articles in which it falsely alleged that Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow had an affair with a woman and smoked cannabis with her.

The newspaper printed an apology on page 2 of this weekend's edition below a picture of Mr Snow.

It read: "Over the last two Sundays we published stories claiming that TV news presenter Jon Snow had an affair with a writer called Precious Williams, and that they smoked cannabis together.

...In a statement, Mr Snow said: "The stories about me in the Mail on Sunday over the last two weeks were entirely fabricated and caused myself, my family and my friends considerable distress. This has been one of the most upsetting and difficult experiences of my life."

He is fairly recently married to a (much younger) woman named Precious, from Zimabwe, I think, but her last name isn't Williams (it is Lunga) and she isn't a writer, she is a scientist/professor/Yale fellow with a massive resume.

Peter, not Jon, Snow was the presenter of Newsnight around the time of the Falklands War.

Though the Hate-Mail hardly limits itself to people in public life, when it does its lying and demonizing.
