Turkey Coup Defeated: President Arrives in Istanbul After Military Group Tries to Seize Power

Source: NBC News

Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan arrived at Istanbul's airport early Saturday and greeted crowds there, hours after elements of the military staged a coup and tried to seize power with tanks and aircraft.

Erdogan emerged from a vehicle at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport at around 4 a.m. Saturday local time (9 p.m. Friday ET). Speaking to the nation, Erdogan said a coup d'etat was attempted by a group in the military.

"They are going to pay for this in the harshest way," Erdogan vowed. He said his general secretary was abducted by coup makers and there is no information on the chief of the military staff. Clashes continued to be reported in Istanbul and the capital of Ankara early Saturday.

After elements of the military shut down bridges in Istanbul with tanks, shut down a state-controlled television station and attempted to seize power Friday, Erdogan had defiantly urged people to take to the streets in a show of support for the government.

ANKARA (AFP) - At least 60 people have been killed and 336 detained in a night of violence across Turkey sparked when elements in the military staged an attempted coup, a senior Turkish official said.

The majority of those killed were civilians and most of those detained are soldiers, said the official, without giving further details. ...........

Erdogan jails dissenters, imprisons journalists, supports or at least permits ISIS to operate on and around the Turkish border, is at war with his countries Kurdish minority, and is an unapologetic Islamist in violation of the Turkish constitution.

Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors HSYK lays off 2,745 judges

The Turkish Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) laid off 2,745 judges and removed five HSYK members after an extraordinary meeting on Saturday, which came after a failed coup attempt by the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ).

Any friend of Gulen is an enemy of Turkey, says prime minister

ISTANBUL — Any country that stands by the Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen will not be a friend of Turkey and will be considered at war with the Nato member, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Saturday.

The government said that followers of Gulen, who has been living in self-imposed exile in the US for years, were behind an attempted coup by a faction of the military on Friday.

The government accuses Gulen of trying to build a "parallel structure" within the judiciary, education system, media and military as a way to overthrow the state, a charge the cleric denies.

A successful overthrow of President Tayyip Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey since 2003, would have marked one of the biggest shifts in the Middle East in years, transforming one of the most important US allies while war rages on its border. A failed coup attempt could still destabilise the pivotal country.
